Early Life and Education: Growing Up in Ohio

Luke was born into the American family of Randy Grimes, a reverend in a Pentecostal Church; this form of evangelical Protestantism values the baptism as a ritual, as well as purity of spirit. There is no information about his mother, Angie Baker. Luke has three older siblings. Given the fact that his family was very religious, he didn’t socialize much during his childhood, spending a lot of time at church camps. In an interview with Blag magazine, he said: ‘I was sheltered as a kid, so I quickly realized what I didn’t want to do and how I didn’t want to live. This helped me mature and get my priorities straight.’ Other than religion, his parents also put emphasis on education – an outstanding student, Luke matriculated from Dayton Christian High School in May 2002. Afterwards, he decided he wanted to be an actor; acting was a way of expression for Luke, so the logical solution was to move to New York City, where he enrolled at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts to study acting. In 2004, he graduated from the famous art conservatory, ready to conquer the industry.

Career Beginnings: All the Boys Love Mandy Lane and More

In 2006 Luke finally debuted on the silver screen, with the role of Jake in “All the Boys Love Mandy Lane” – the movie was critically acclaimed, and seen as one of the better titles in the horror genre. While Jake played a relatively important role, it took a another movie for him to become more famous, and in 2007 he played the lead part in “War Eagle, Arkansas”, which allowed him to showcase his acting skills in a more demanding role. With the success of his first two parts, Luke then landed roles in “Assassination of a High School President” and “Shit Year”, before getting his first proper break. In “Brothers & Sisters”, he assumed the role of Ryan Lafferty in a total of 35 episodes, his first role in a major TV show, and recognised him as a proper star.

Continued Success: True Blood and Fifty Shades of Grey

After 2010, Luke was already an established actor, so he succeeded in continuing his streak of successful performances. “The Light in the Night” was followed by “Outlaw Country” and the hit action movie “96 Hours: Istanbul” – critics particularly loved his chemistry with Liam Neeson during the hostage crisis depicted in the film. Because of this quality performance, in 2013 he was cast as James Kent in six episodes of “True Blood”. A year later, Luke pleased everyone with his performance as Marc Lee in the hit movie “American Sniper”. In 2015, he may have had the biggest role in his career, playing the older brother of Elliot Grey in the erotic drama, “Fifty Shades of Grey”. 2016 was particularly busy, as he appeared in works such as “Manhattan Undying”, “The Magnificent Seven” and “Shangri-La Suite”.

Recent Works, Completing the “Fifty Shades” Trilogy, Yellowstone and More

Grimes was so successful in his portrayal of Elliot Grey that he was invited to reprise the role in the second and third movies of the trilogy, “Fifty Shades Darker” and “Fifty Shades Freed”. In 2018, he was cast as Kayce Dutton in the hit TV series, “Yellowstone”., and as of mid-2019, Luke has roles in several movies that are in post-production, so we’ll see more of him in the upcoming years.

1I'm not really a fan of organized religion.
2I don't really invest too much in the future.
3It's really odd to be up close to an icon like Bruce Willis. You're used to seeing him on a screen, 50 feet tall. To think, 'Hmm, I'm taller than you are' is just weird.
