Early life and education

Ismael was raised in Aguas Buenas by his father who is a small store owner, and his mother who is an English teacher working at an elementary school.

Ismael became interested in acting at the age of nine joining his High School Drama Club as soon as he enrolled at high school, and at the age of 15 he was already appearing in local commercials and short films. He was very sporting while attending high school as he played football and ran track. After matriculation at the age of 19, he moved to New York City to pursue a career in acting, enrolling at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.

Ismael made his debut film appearance in 2003 portraying Gatillo in “Stray Bullet” while he won his next role nine years later after completing his education in 2012, in “White Alligator”.

He went on to appear in several short films such as “La Edwin” in 2012, “Chaser” in 2013, and “La Loteria” in 2014, and the same year won his first lead role in a movie in “In the Blood”. After being praised for his performance, he was invited to star as Henry in “Simple Little Lives” in 2015 and as Jose De La Cruz in “Exposed” in 2016. Rumors began circulating the internet in 2019 that the popular actor might be in a relationship with Gina Rodriguez, the star of the “Miss Bala” film, after he began uploading pictures of them together onto his Instagram account. Ismael has been physically active throughout the years, playing several sports at high school, and going to the gym since he matriculated and moved to New York City. He occasionally uploads pictures taken during his workouts onto his Instagram account, and he is a on a strict diet, believing that eating healthy is even more important than exercising. He is a philanthropist who has donated money to several charity organizations, while he is currently using his fame to gather money for thousands of Puerto Ricans who need help after the island was struck by several earthquakes.

He likes to travel and has been to many states in the USA, and recently to Namibia in Africa and has uploaded several pictures from his trip onto Instagram. Some of Ismael’s favorite actors and actresses are Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, and Lupita Nyongo, while some of the movies he enjoys watching are “Black Panther”, “Beasts of No Nation”, and “The Gods Must Be Crazy”.
