Early life and education

Idara and one younger and one older sister were raised in Brooklyn and Long Island by their parents Stan, a writer and accountant, and Barbara Victor, a case worker, who are both from the southern Nigerian state of Akwa Ibom.

Idara was interested in numerous things while she was growing up, and started dancing and learning how to play the piano when she turned eight. She won the Miss New York Junior Teen contest at the age of 13, and at the age of 15 sang an opera aria in a state competition. She was soon discovered by a modelling agent, who helped her launch her career in the modelling industry, however, Idara stopped modelling after a year, as she wanted to pursue her dream of becoming a famous actress.

After matriculation, she won a partial scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business, from which she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurial management and marketing.

While at university, Idara began performing readings from Shakespeare, and was part of the African Rhythms West African ballet group, while she also practiced Afro-Cuban dance from time to time. Upon graduation, she applied for a job at “InStyle”, magazine and began writing music with Mike “Double-O” – better known as a member of the Kidz In The Hall band.

She started practicing acting at the Tisch School of the Arts’ Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, and was then asked by John Caird, an English stage director, to move to New York where he hired her to appear in her first Broadway show – “Les Miserables” – playing Cosette, the first coloured performer in the role. She went on to appear in various plays at The Public Theater, Lincoln Center, and the Roundabout Theater Company.

Idara made her debut TV series appearance in 2004, when she portrayed Lania Caldwell in “Not Just Yet”, and then in 2005 she played Adam’s Dream Woman in a single episode of the “Starved” TV series.

The year 2006 saw her appear in two TV series – “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “All My Children” – while she portrayed CO2 Waitress in “Guiding Light” and was part of the Camelot Ensemble in the “Live from Lincoln” TV series in 2008. She made her debut film appearance in the “Safe Haven” movie in 2009, and in the same year portrayed Nova in a single episode of the “Law & Order” TV series. In 2010, she was cast in “How to Make It in America” and “The Young and the Restless” TV series’, and had a single role in 2011 portraying Stephanie in the “Prime Suspect” TV series. In 2012, Idara played Antigone in the “Watching TV with the Red Chinese” film, Pilar Rodrigues in “Private Practice”, and “Ariel in “Unicorn Plan-It” TV series.

The year 2013 saw her appear in five TV series, including “Vegas”, “Mad Men”, and “The Choir” in which she portrayed Miriam in eight episodes.

She won two important roles for her acting career in 2014. First, she began playing Abigail and Agent 355 in “Turn: Washington’s Spies” TV series, appearing in 18 episodes between 2014 and 2017. Her second important role was as Nina Holiday in the “Rizzoli & Isles” TV series, appearing in 42 episodes from 2014 to 2016. Idara has remained very secretive regarding her love life, but she often tweets about her boyfriend although she hasn’t revealed his name.
