Evelyn was raised in her hometown of Charleston by her parents – her father, Joseph McGee, served as a civil litigator in his own company, Buist Smythe McGee, and was also active in South Carolina’s House of Representatives. Upon matriculation, Evelyn enrolled in the College of Arts and Science at the University of Virginia, majoring in both Drama and English, and graduated in 1985.

Evelyn’s acting career started in 1999, when she debuted by appearing in a small role in the Comedy Central’s comedy series “Strangers With Candy”.
In 2005, she starred in the role of Clair Noblet in its prequel of the same name directed by Paul Dinello, featuring her husband Stephen Colbert. Her next notable role came in 2013, when she portrayed a Laketown spy in the epic high fantasy adventure “The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug”, directed by Peter Jackson and based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s novel “The Hobbit”. Stephen started his career as an understudy, working for Steve Carell. He then met Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello, and together they launched the Comedy Central’s comedy sketch series “Exit 57” (1995-1996). Thereafter, he worked as a writer for “The Dana Carvey Show” and then reunited with Sedaris and Dinello to work on “Strangers With Candy”, in which he portrayed Chuck Noblet.
