Who is Poppy Harlow?

Katherine Julia ‘Poppy’ Harlow was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota USA, on 2 May 1982 – her zodiac sign is Taurus, and she holds American nationality. She’s a journalist, probably known best for the work which she’s done for the multinational news-based pay TV channel CNN.

Early life and education

Poppy was raised in Minneapolis alongside her younger brother, by their mother Mary Louise Baird who’s a housewife, and their father James Lee Harlow who was a lawyer, and who passed away in 1997. Poppy’s brother holds a Bachelor’s degree from Columbia University.

Poppy initially wanted to become a lawyer, looking up to her father and wanting to follow in his footsteps.

She studied at the private preparatory The Black School, and was interested in a couple of activities during her four years there, including acting with the school’s drama club, and contributing to school newspaper. It was during this time that she realized that journalism was her calling and not law.

Upon matriculating in 2000, Poppy enrolled at Columbia University, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in political and Middle Eastern studies in 2004.

Career as a journalist

Poppy began her internship at CBS while still attending college, and was upon graduation hired to work as an assistant producer for CBS MarketWatch and CBS Newspath.

She spent the following couple of years reporting for and anchoring the NY1’s show “News Local Edition”, mostly covering New Jersey and Staten Island, focused on political, cultural and economic events.

It was in the second half of the 2000s that Poppy joined the Forbes.com Video Network, and began covering various events for them, including business, entertainment and fashion.

Poppy was hired by CNN in 2008, and initially anchored their financial news show “CNNMoney.com”, while simultaneously reporting for HLN, CNN International and CNN. She became CNN correspondent for New York State in April 2012, and was for her reporting skills presented with both a SABEW Best in Business Award, and a Gracie Award for Best Online Investigative Program or Feature.

She today occasionally fills in for British journalist Richard Austin Quest on CNN International.

Poppy passed out on 28 December 2015 while live on air, and fell under her anchor desk. She soon reappeared and stated that she was a little bit hot, while she later tweeted from a hospital, and revealed that she and her baby were both well.

Since 6 February 2017, Poppy has been co-anchoring “CNN Newsroom” together with Jim Sciutto; she was hired after the former anchor Carol Costello had moved to HLN.

Controversy

Back in 2013, two high school Football Players from Steubenville, Ohio were convicted for the raping of a 16 years old girl.

Poppy reported on the conviction, and seemed to sympathize with the boys, stating ‘”incredibly difficult, even for an outsider like me, to watch what happened as these two young men that had such promising futures, star football players, very good students, literally watched as they believed their lives fell apart …’

Her comment received a lot of criticism, and a petition was launched requesting CNN to apologize for Poppy’s words, gathering more than 250,000 signatures in only two days.

Poppy’s highly active on Instagram, and is today followed by more than 60,000 people, while she’s uploaded over 1,000 pictures, most of which have been taken during her everyday life.

Poppy prefers to keep the details of her love life to herself, but has still allowed her fans to have a glimpse into it. She has been married to American businessman Sinisa Babcic since 2012; he’s today a partner and wealth management consultant at Ernst & Young. In April 2016, Poppy gave birth to their daughter Sienna Babcic, and their son Luca James followed in February 2018.
