Is Brittany Ashton Holmes still acting?
The child actress who gained fame in the middle ‘90s starting with her first ever role, Brittany Ashton Holmes, who is 30 years old today, has unfortunately ended her coquetry with acting for good and all. She “retired” early in 1996, apparently to be able to build a normal life, far away from the limelight and all the pressure it puts on young celebrities. Now she resides in Los Angeles, and is working on her career in political science.
Being a child actress, she was on screen from an early age, possibly without fully understanding the hit she was making, no doubt partly due to her background. She was born on 27 February 1989, in Los Angeles, California, USA, which was a major advantage for her early ambition of becoming an actress. From another point of view, her parents, despite keeping their identities and occupations private, supported the little girl in every appearance she made. They brought her to her first audition for “The Little Rascals”, and she made the rest with her cute face, natural answers, and adorable mimics.
Reportedly, she grew up in her hometown and matriculated from high school there. Her teenage years were very active, as she needed to channel her energy somewhere, so she even played soccer for her school.
Rise to prominence
In the majority of other celebrities’ biographies, when we are talking about their rise to prominence, we refer to a period of some years, with a lot of projects; this is not Brittany’s case. If adult actors need more time to convince the public about their talent, children behaving naturally can be, at first glance, adorable or not. Thus, Brittany needed only one big and successful project to catch a major audience, as well as receiving a lot of acclaim from people in the industry. We are talking here about the well-known family comedy “The Little Rascals”, produced by Universal Pictures and released in 1994, in which she played the role of Darla.
The movie in general, was a great success of its time, with a gross income of more than $50 million solely in the US. For Brittany personally, it was a huge achievement, too; firstly she had the opportunity to play with Travis Tedford, Kevin Jamal Woods, Jordan Warkol and already famous people such as Blake McIver Ewing, Mel Brooks, Ashley Olsen, and even the current President of the USA, Donald Trump. This group of young actors including Brittany, won the Young Artist Award for “Best Performance by a Youth Ensemble in a Motion Picture” in 1995.
This list of other projects Brittany participated in could not be longer, taking into account she had practically only a three-year-long career. After “The Little Rascals” she secured some other roles, but never equaled the critical acclaim she received for her first role at only five years of age. 1995 was the year of TV series for her – first she appeared in an episode of “Ellen”, playing Julie, and then she was seen in “Red Shoe Diaries’ as Dana in the episode “Divorce, Divorce”. For the performance in Ellen, she was even nominated at Young Artist Awards for “Best Performance by an Actress Under Ten – Television”. In 1996 she went back to playing in movies, but the ones she appeared in – “Humanoids from the Deep”, “Inhumanoid” and “Death Benefit” – were only low-budget science fiction or horror movies.
Some of you, who are not great film fans, maybe know her not from the movies, but from the commercials she was filmed in during the ‘90s, in McDonald’s and Baby Guess’ ads.
2-27: Brittany Ashton Holmes is 28 today. She is best known for playing Darla in the 1994 film The Little Rascals. She retired from acting
Despite having a relatively private life, with very few public projects, Brittany had at least two interesting public appearances in later years that brought her into the limelight, for a short period of time. One of them was the only movie she has done as an adult – “We Hate Paul Revere” released in 2014 on AMC. Unfortunately, it was canceled by the channel in the same year.
Another interesting and emotional event was the reunion of actors from “The Little Rascals” 20 years after the release of the movie. It was organized by the movie handlers, and almost the entire main cast attended. They even made photos shooting ’Then and Now’, during which photos of various well-known characters were retaken.
However, Brittany came to the conclusion that acting was not her thing, and she does not feel at ease even looking at her old performances. She has shared these ideas with her followers on MySpace: ‘I was an actress when I was little and did this movie called The Little Rascals. It’s, like, really embarrassing to watch and I don’t want to act anymore’.
Not much is known about Holmes personal life. The sure thing is that she paid specific attention to her academic development, and as a result she has a degree in political science from an unnamed university and is working to build a career in this domain.
Some rumors mention her being newly married, however, this news has never been confirmed by her. One of the things she likes to do with her free time and her energy is to travel. She has visited a lot of places so far and is not going to stop.
Brittany is 5 feet 3 inches (1.6m) tall and weighs 110lbs (50 kgs). Her brown eyes and hair are her icons. Regarding her online presence, we can assume she does not like to use social media very much. As a result, she has only a modest community of little over 1,000 people on Twitter, and her MySpace profile is private.
