Victoria’s father was from Russia, while her mother was born in Italy into a Jewish family – they moved to the US not long before Victoria was born. John became part of his first gang at the age of 12, and at the age of 16 made friends with several boys who would later join the Gambino family – he first started working for Carmine Fatico who was a capo, captain in the family.

John was arrested in February 1968 for stealing from United Airlines, and then once again for stealing $50,000 worth of cigarettes while he was out on bail – he spent less than three years in jail for United Airlines hijacking, while the charges for stealing cigarettes were dropped.

He became a capo in the Gambino family in 1972, and was sentenced to four years in jail in June 1974 after killing McBratney, a man who killed a nephew of the Gambino family’s boss Carlo Gambino.

After the new Gambino family’s boss Paul Castellano ended up in prison in 1984, John was chosen to serve as the family’s boss – he made a plan to assassinate the boss after he was released from prison on 16 December 1985, and he was declared the new boss at a meeting which 20 capos attended on 15 January 1986 – John chose Frank DeCicco as the underboss, and Gallo as his consigliere (advisor and lawyer).

The Gambino family became the most powerful mafia in the US, which counted around $500 million of income per year. However, John surrendered to the police on 14 December 1992 to face numerous charges, and spent the rest of his life in the US Penitentiary at Marion, Illinois, most of his time in solitary confinement, being allowed to spend only an hour per day outside. John’s third son Peter became the family’s boss in 1999 – John died in prison on 19 June 2002 at the age of 61 from throat cancer.
