Born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou on the 25th June 1963, in East Finchley, London England, he is of Greek ancestry through his father Kyriacos Panayiotou, who is a Greek Cypriot restaurateur who left Greece in the ‘50s and settled in England, and of English ancestry through his mother, Lesley Angold. He was the youngest child in the family, as he has two older sisters, Yioda and Melanie.

He initially went to Kingsbury High School, but moved to Radlett where he went to Bushey Meads School. During this time, his musical aspirations started appearing, and alongside Andrew Ridgeley, his classmate, eventually formed the music duo, Wham! in 1981. Before Wham!, the two were a part of the ska-band The Executive, alongside Paul Ridgeley, Andrew Leaver and David Austin

Career

Wham! existed from 1981 until 1986, during which time they released three studio albums -“Fantastic” in 1983, which topped the UK chart and achieved triple platinum status in Britain and gold status in the USA.

The second album came out in 1984, entitled “Make It Big”, which topped the UK and US Billboard 200 chart, while it achieved four-times platinum status in the UK and six times platinum status in the USA. Before the break-up, they released a third album “Music from the Edge of Heaven”, which wasn’t as successful as the previous releases.

George continued his career as a solo musician, and released five studio albums. His debut album “Faith”, released in 1987, became one of his most successful albums ever released as it topped the UK and US charts, and achieved four-times platinum status in the UK, and five times platinum status in the USA.
