Josh was raised in Lexington by his mother Carolyn who was a housewife, and his father Larry Jones Hopkins who is an American politician, in the US House of Representatives from 1979 to 1993 representing Kentucky’s 6th congressional district.

Josh attended high school in his hometown, and after matriculation worked several jobs such as being a waiter and pool cleaner, while simultaneously pursuing a career in acting. He eventually enrolled at Auburn University in Alabama, from which he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1995.

Josh’s roles in movies

Josh made his debut film appearance playing Marty in “Parallel Sons” in 1996, and then in the “Paulie” short film in the same year. 1997 saw him appear in another short film – “Stick Up” – and portray Flea in “G.I. Jane” in the same year.

He appeared in three films in 2000 – “Love & Sex”, “Auto Motives”, and “The Perfect Storm”, in which he portrayed Captain Darryl Ennis and was praised for his performance. He went on to play Chuck in “One Eyed King” in 2001, and in 2002 played an actor and a cop in the “Chicken Party” short movie. In 2007, he had a support role of Chet in “The Insatiable”, and in 2008 portrayed George in “Pretty Ugly People”.

Josh became keen on appearing in short films, and won roles in two of these in 2008 – “The Spirit of ’76: The Making of Swingtown” and “Have a Nice Revolution: Sex & Morality in 1970’s America”. He appeared in only a few movies during the next couple of years, including “Lebanon, Pa.”, “Kelly & Cal”, and “The Opposite Sex”, while his most recent appearance was in “Car Dogs” in 2014.

From 1998 to 1999, he in the main cast of “New York Undercover”, playing Detective Alec Stone in 13 episodes of the series. From 1999 to 2001, he portrayed Matt Prophet in nine episodes of “Jack & Jill”, and in 2001 appeared in two episodes of “Kate Brasher” as Officer Tony Giordano.

His role as Raymond Millbury in “Ally McBeal” in 2001 and 2002 made him somewhat popular, appearing in 22 episodes of the series’ fifth season.

He was a singer at Monica and Chandler’s wedding in a single episode of “Friends” in 2002, and from 2003 to 2006 portrayed Assistant D.A. Kite in “Cold Case”, simultaneously appearing in several other TV series, such as “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” in 2003, “North Shore” in 2004, and “Bones” in 2005.

In 2006, Josh played in three TV series – “Vanished”, “Pepper Dennis”, and “Brothers and Sisters” – while he appeared in a single episode of “Ghost Whisperer” in 2007. The year 2009 saw him in “12 Men of Christmas”, “Pushing Daisies”, and “CSI: Miami”, before he won the role of Grayson Ellis in “Cougar Town”, appearing in 102 episodes between 2009 and 2015.
