He gained recognition in 1997, when he released his second album “My Way”, while its lead single “Nice & Slow” was Usher’s first song to top the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart.

He was raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, alongside his half-brother James Lackey, by their mother Jonetta Patton (nee O’Neal) and James’ father; Usher’s biological father Usher Raymond III abandoned the family when he was a year old.

It was Usher’s grandmother who discovered that Usher could sing, and his family eventually moved to Atlanta, believing that he had better chances at launching his career as a musician there. He studied at North Springs High School, and upon matriculating didn’t enroll at college, but chose to pursue music.

Usher was 10 when he became a member of the R&B quintet NuBeginnings, and they released 10 songs, as well as the album “Nubeginning Featuring Usher Raymond IV” in 1991. He signed a contract with LaFace Records in the same year and then quit NuBeginnings; his self-titled debut album was released on 30 August 1994, peaking at #24 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart, while it spawned hit songs “Can U Get Wit It” and “The Many Ways”.

He launched his acting career with an appearance in a 1997 episode of the series “Moesha”, and the following year saw him appear in the movie “The Faculty”; Usher also played a supporting character in the soap opera “The Bold and the Beautiful”, and appeared in the 1999 romantic comedy movies “She’s All That” and “Light It Up” (lead role).

He released his third album “8701” on 7 August 2001, and in February 2002, his song “U Remind Me” won him a Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance; Usher won the same award in the following year, for “U Don’t Have to Call”. His fourth album “Confessions” was released on 23 March 2004, and was followed by his fifth “Here I Stand” on 27 May 2008, which topped the Billboard 200 Chart.

Usher has since released three more albums: “Raymond v. Raymond” in 2010, “Looking 4 Myself” in 2012 and “Hard II Love” in 2016; he’s currently working on his 10th album “Confessions 2”, set to be released by the end of 2022.
