He had a half-brother through his biological father, Dwayne McDuffie, a comic book writer, who died in 2011.
For his education, Keegan-Michael enrolled at the University of Detroit Mercy, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theater, and then obtained a Master of Fine Arts degree in theater from Pennsylvania State University in 1996.
