CBS Network

CBS got its name/acronym from the network’s former name, the Columbia Broadcasting System – it is an American commercial broadcast TV and radio network owned by the CBS Entertainment Group, which is owned by ViacomCBS. Its main offices are located in the CBS Building in New York City, with several production facilities in New York and Los Angeles. The network has been using an eye symbol since 1951, which is why it is often called the Eye Network – it is also called Tiffany Network.

CBS dates back to 1928 when Paley purchased 16 radio stations which were united into the United Independent Broadcasters Inc. before being renamed to the Columbia Broadcasting System. Paley made the network into one of the largest in the US, while it eventually became one of the Big Three American broadcast TV networks – the network was bought by the Westinghouse Electric Corporation in 1995, when it was renamed to CBS Broadcasting, Inc. two years later, while it soon became only CBS. Viacom bought the company in 2000.

CBS Radio merged with Entercom in 2017, prior to which, it mostly provided news and feature content to large and mid-sized markets – now CBS has divested itself from direct ownership of any radio stations. There are over 240 CBS owned and operated TV stations around the US, while some are also available in Canada via pay-television providers. CBS currently ranks 197th on the “Fortune 500” list of the largest US corporations by revenue compiled by “Fortune” magazine”.
