Moon Byul-yi was born in Buncheon, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, on 22 December 1992 – her zodiac sign is Sagittarius and she holds South Korean nationality. She is a rapper/singer, songwriter, and an actress best known for being a member of the South Korean girl group Mamamoo.
Early life and education
Moonbyul was raised with her two younger sisters named Seulgi and Yesol in her hometown, by their father who is a programmer, and mother who is a housewife. She became interested in singing at the age of six and started taking singing lessons, as well as learning how to play the guitar.
After her matriculation from high school, she enrolled at Paekche Institute of the Arts for media music and vocals in 2011, later stating in an interview that she didn’t expect to be accepted because of how prestigious the school is. Nevertheless, she graduated in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in media music.
Career as a singer and an actress
Moonbyul launched her career as a singer in 2014, when she, Solar, Wheein, and Hwasa started their own band called Mamamoo. The band began by collaborating with other artists such as Bumkey, K. Will, and Wheesung, before they made their official debut on 18 June 2014 with their song “Mr. Ambiguous”, and released their first extended play (EP) entitled “Hello”.
They made their debut TV show appearance in “M Countdown” on 19 June, and a month later in July released their first original soundtrack, entitled “Love Lane” for the “Marriage, Not Dating” South Korean drama. Their second EP entitled “Piano Mane” was released on 21 November 2014, and it reached #41 on Gaon’s Digital Chart. They entered the “Immortal Songs 2” singing competition, reaching the finals but losing to Kim Kyung-ho.
Their third EP entitled “Pink Funky” was released on 19 June 2015, and its lead single “Um Oh Ah Yeh” became a commercial success, reaching #3 on the Gaon Chart.
They organized a fan meeting entitled “1st Moo Party” which sold out in less than a minute, leading to Mamamoo creating another event the same night for 1,200 more fans. On 7 November 2016, they released their fourth EP entitled “Memory”, and their first full-length album entitled “Melting” was released on 26 February 2016, reaching #3 on the Gaon Chart. Their fifth EP entitled “Purple” was released on 22 June 2017, the sixth – “Yellow Flower” – on 7 March 2018, and seventh EP -“Red Moon” was released on 16 July 2018.
Their ninth EP “White Wind” was released on 14 March 2019 while their second full-length album entitled “Reality in Black” was released on 14 November 2019.
Moonbyul launched her solo career in May 2018 with her single “Selfish”, while she has collaborated with other singers throughout the years such as with Yoo Sung-eun in “Nothing” in 2015, and HA: TFELT in “Happy Now” in 2019. She made her debut TV series appearance in “Start Love” portraying Yoo Na-young in five episodes in 2015, and then made her debut TV show appearance in “Idol Drama Operation Team”, appearing in three episodes in 2017. In the same year, she appeared in 74 episodes with Solar, her friend from Mamamoo, in “Battle Trip”, and well as in 13 episodes of “Beer Love Trip”.

Moonbyul is keeping her personal matters to herself, and therefore not much about her love life is known, however, she stated in an interview in 2018 that she might have found love but does not want to provide more details until she is certain that this would be serious.
Some believe Moonbyul to be lesbian, but in 2017 she shared in an interview that her ideal type of a man is a person similar to South Korean actor Gong Yoo, and added that she ‘sort of like dinosaur face-types and guys with broad shoulders, guys who can just grab and hug me in one go’.

She is a shopaholic who goes shopping for clothes on a daily basis, and because she enjoys wearing long-sleeved clothes, she has been given the nickname ‘Conservative Mom”. However, she also likes to curse, and has been given a second nickname for that which is ‘Black Hole’. Moonbyul likes to travel and has stated in an interview she is dreaming about having a tour around the US, which she and the other band members are planning to do in either 2020 or 2021.
Moonbyul has travelled to several countries in Asia, and has also been to Europe on several occasions to countries such as Finland, Sweden, and England, while her dream travel destination is Paris, France. She is a big lover of animals and has a pet dog called Daebakie.
