His official career started after he was hired at WMAL, a sports radio station in Washington, D.C. where he worked until 1994, and then moved across town as a desk assistant at WTTG-TV. In the following year Jim was hired to work as a reporter and anchor for WBIR-TV, based in Knoxville, Tennessee, and remained there until 1998. He then worked for two years as a reporter at KTVT-TV in Dallas, Texas, followed by a period at WBBM-TV, located in Chicago, Illinois. He then served as the CNN senior White House correspondent, while he was promoted to the position of chief White House correspondent in January of 2018. His subsequent verbal altercations with President Trump and others of the White House staff made for interesting viewing, resulting in Jim’s access to White House press conferences being blocked, subsequently restored only under the threat of legal action by CNN.

Most recently, Acosta published the book “The Enemy of The People: A Dangerous Time To Tell The Truth In America” (2019), a reference to the aforementioned controversy.
