Childhood and education
Mark grew up in Glasgow where he was raised by his parents – he stated in an interview how he enjoyed living there, but liked to spend his free time in the nature. He matriculated from a high school in Glasgow, and then enrolled at West Virginia University from which he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1992.
Career as a TV personality
Mark launched his career by becoming a mine safety technician. In 1996, a friend of his asked him to help him destroy his old barn, which is when Mark came up with an idea to start his own company, which he named Antique Cabins and Barns – the company has reportedly been doing business well to this day, having changed its name to Barnwood Living in 2016.
In 2013, DIY Network created a show which would follow Mark’s life and his company, and they named it “Barnwood Builders” – the reality TV series also follows five other builders, as they convert historic barns and log cabins into modern houses.
The show’s eight seasons began airing on 7 April 2019. In 2017, the Discovery channel promised Brown and his wife that they would choose nine episodes from the “Barnwood Builders” series, and create an entirely new show which would air on their channel – the first episode aired on 30 June 2018.

The two married on 31 March 2003, and are now parents to a son named Atticus – the family of three is living in their house on their property which they purchased in Greenbrier County. Cindy is known for running for the West Virginia House of delegates – after that, she became a history teacher, and also started teaching children how to play tennis and baseball. Today, she is helping her husband with their family business.

Mark is very fond of spending his free time in nature, which is something he has in common with Cindy – the two are trying to live their life away from big cities, preferring to live on a farm.

Cindy Lavender was born in West Virginia USA in 1971 – she is best known for being a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates representing District 42, while she also gained some recognition after becoming Mark’s wife.
She was born into a family of coal miners as both her grandfathers have worked in the mines – her parents were very young when she was born so all four of her grandparents helped raise her. Cindy’s father was part of the Air Force before launching his career as a pipe fitter at DuPont in Kanawha County – he went on to graduate from college and eventually became a process engineer.
Cindy’s mother was a housewife who began attending college at the age of 42 and graduated in nursing.
Cindy matriculated from a high school in Kanawha County, before enrolling at West Virginia University’s Institute of Technology, and graduating with a bachelor’s degree in social studies in 1993. She continued her education at Marshall University from which she graduated with a master’s degree in leadership studies, educational studies, and administration in 1996. Cindy’s work experience includes co-owning the Barnwood Living company with her husband, and being a teacher at Kanawha County Public Schools.
She decided to stand in the general elections for West Virginia House of Delegates District 42 in November 2018 – there were two open seats, and Jeff Campbell and Cindy beat Denny Canterbury Sr. and Steve Malcomb, having previously defeated Isaiah Stanley and Roger Vannoy in the Democratic primary for West Virginia House of Delegates District 42.
Cindy is a philanthropist and a volunteer, who enjoys helping those in need – she is one of the founders of the Greenbrier Valley Flood Recovery and Relief Committee, as well as the Lewisburg Literary Group. She is currently serving as the vice-president of the Greenbrier Episcopal School’s board of directors, and is the executive director of the United Way of the Greenbrier Valley.
