Early life and education

Myrka was raised in Philadelphia by her parents, about whom little is known because she respects their privacy; it’s believed that her father was a truck driver, and that her mother was an elementary school teacher. Although Myrka hasn’t spoken of having any siblings, it’s said that she has a younger sister.

She became interested in journalism while attending a local high school, but was also into modelling; it was Myrka’s parents who urged her to focus on her education, and to pursue a college degree. She was physically quite active during her teenage years, playing soccer for her high school’s team, while also playing volleyball and tennis.

Upon matriculating in 1983, Myrka enrolled at University of Miami, from which she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in journalism in 1986.

Career as a journalist

Myrka hasn’t shared many details concerning her early career with her fans, but it’s known that she worked for a couple of TV and radio stations for five years following graduation.

She gained recognition in 1992, when she signed a contract with the American Spanish-language TV network Univision, and began co-hosting their news show “Primer Impacto”. Myrka spent the following 12 years holding the job, and only a couple of months after that, in 2004, she was named ‘Star of the Year’ by the magazine “People en Español”. She has hosted some of the Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations at the White House, and was made a member of the Freedom Corps by now-former US President George W. Bush, which is a group comprising 25 people who are involved in charity work.

In the last decade, Myrka has been focused more on philanthropy rather than on hosting TV and radio shows.

She became the spokesperson for the movement I Am Second in 2013, which aims to help those struggling with various life issues, including child abuse, divorce and abortion, by providing spiritual inspiration.
