Jake has an older brother, Austin James Short, and two younger sisters, Gillian and Jessilyn Short. Jake remembers that he always had fun with his brother and father, playfully wrestling in their backyard; in one such game Jake hit his head on the floor, blacked out and was transported to the hospital with what turned out to be just concussion, but that was all. Jake was passionate about sports from an early age – while at school, he played soccer, attended gymnastics classes, and still managed to find the time to play the guitar, and become a martial artist. However, Austin, his older brother, noticed the acting talent in him, and pushed him to attending acting classes when Jake was only 10 years old. Austin even supported him by also taking acting classes, but soon dropped out, as he was not really interested in it; but he reached his goal, and Jake understood he was quite good at acting.
Nothing in particular is known about the name of the school which Jake matriculated from in 2015, except that is was in Indianapolis. However, Jake didn’t enter any college or university after his matriculation, diving right into the acting profession.
Starting acting career
Jake started his acting career with a small role in the movie “Anna Nicole” (2007), playing the young version of Daniel. The movie told the story of the model, Anna Nicole Smith, and was welcomed warmly by the critics, so Jake was really lucky to appear in the movie, as he soon got another invitation. In 2009 he landed the role in the movie entitled “Shorts”, playing Nose Noseworthy, also appearing in the TV film “Jack and Janet Save the Planet”, in the role of Mookie in the same year.
Jake was full of energy, and landed two more roles before 2009 was over: he appeared in the episode “Bros Go Pro” in the popular TV show “Zeke and Luther” and then played the role of Scott Smith in the super popular series “Dexter”, appearing in such episodes as “Hello, Dexter Morgan”, “Lost Boys”, and “The Getaway”.
Jake’s appearance in “Dexter” made his name familiar to many producers and directors, and he began receiving offers even more often. He landed the role of Tyler in the episode called “The Other Side” in the TV show “Futurestates” (2010), and the next year played Timmy in the episode entitled “Goodson Goes Deep” in the TV film “$h*! My Dad Says” (2011), also appearing as Adam in the short movie “It Is Dark in Here” (2011).
However, the greatest twist of his career happened right after he landed his first main role in the TV show – Jake got the role of Fletcher Quimby in the series “A.N.T. Farm” (2011 – 2014), and woke-up famous. The Disney Production show attracted huge interest from the audience, and Jake proved his talent and acting skills, performing to a very high level. While filming in “A.N.T. Farm”, Jake also made his appearances in “Kirby Buckets”, the short film “A Son Like You”, and the “Mighty Med” (2013 – 2015) series, in which he played the role of Oliver. Among his Disney projects, Jake appeared in “Lab Rats: Elite Force” (2016) in the role of Oliver; “All Night” (2018), in which he got the main role of the guy named Fig; “#Roxy” (2018), in which Jake played Cyrus Nollen, and “Man of the House” (2018), the TV film in which Jake landed the role of Bradley.
Even though Jake is quite young, his talent has sparkled brightly, getting attention of the audience and the critics. He managed to jointly win in the category Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a Young Ensemble Cast” at Young Artist Awards 2010, the movie “Shorts”. He also won “Kids’ Choice Award” in 2012 as “Favorite TV Actor”, being again nominated in the same category in 2014.
Jake has always been fond of singing and performing, so he didn’t give up his hobby, and sang in the country band “Counting Dayz”. He also worked as a model, having commercial contracts with such companies and brands as Glad, Danimals, Febreeze, Florida Orange Juice, and many others.
Jake has also shared that he had a dream to appear in the legendary series “The Big Bang Theory” (2007 – 2019), playing opposite Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons and Kaley Cuoco, but he would never manage to do so, as the series is closing this year, in 2019, having eight seasons launched in total. Another never-coming-true dream of Jake was to appear in another legendary series, “Friends”. However, the creators confirmed they would never reboot the series, so Jake’s dream to share the screen with Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox and Matthew Perry will stay a dream forever.
