Who is Anna Chapman?

Anna Vasilyevna Kushchenko was born in Volgograd, Russian SFSR, then Soviet Union, on 23 February 1982 – her zodiac sign is Pisces, and she holds Russian nationality. She’s a former model and media personality, who was arrested in the USA on 27 June 2010, after it was discovered that she was working as a sleeper agent for the Russian external intelligence agency Sluzhba Vneshney Razvedki.

Early life and education

Anna was raised in Volgograd alongside her sister Yekaterina Kushchenko, by their father who worked for the Soviet Union’s main security agency KGB, and who spent most of his time in the Soviet embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, and their mother who was a housewife; according to several sources, including the daily Russian tabloid newspaper “Komsomolskaya Pravda”, Anna’s father had an important position in the KGB.

She grew up being focused on her studies, mostly because her parents urged her to do so, and because of her father’s position, Anna grew up having everything she wanted. She was physically quite active while attending a local high school, and played various sports, while she also acted with the school’s drama club, and practiced creative writing.

Upon matriculating in 2000, Anna enrolled at the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia in Moscow, from which she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 2004; according to her late ex-husband Alex Chapman, she then enrolled at Moscow University, graduating with a Master’s degree in 2006.

Life after college

Anna received a British passport while still attending Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, thanks to her marriage to Alex, and it was in either 2003 or 2004 that she moved to London, England and found a job at the British multi-national universal bank Barclays.

She moved to New York in 2009, and began living not far from Wall Street in Manhattan, in the skyscraper 20 Exchange Place; in the same year, Anna’s LinkedIn’s account showed that she was the CEO of the real estate company PropertyFinder LLC, and that there were 50 people working for her. Her husband Alex later revealed that she had previously told him how the company had constantly been in debt.

In 2009 and 2010, Anna was apparently in a relationship with Israeli-Moroccan restaurant owner Michel Bittan, as the two were seen spending time together on a number of occasions, and it’s also believed that he helped her buy ecstasy tablets.

Following her arrest in the summer of 2010, Anna pleaded guilty to not notifying the US Attorney General of having been an agent of a foreign government, and was deported to Russia later that year in a prisoner exchange between Russia and the USA.

Life after deportation

In December 2010, Anna joined the public council Young Guard of United Russia, and was in charge of ‘educating young people’.

On 21 January 2011, she became the host of the weekly TV show “Secrets of the World”, which aired on the Russian free-to-air network REN TV, and the same year saw her become the editor of the magazine “Venture Business News”.

In May and June 2011, Ana testified against former KGB soldier Colonel Poteyev, claiming that he was the only person who could have let the US authorities know about her being a Russian spy, and that she was contacted by a US agent using a code which only Poteyev had known.

In September 2011, Anna gave a speech on leadership at St Petersburg University, but apparently wasn’t welcome there, as some of the students told her to ‘get out of the university’ and that ‘the Kremlin and the porn studio are in the other direction’.

It was reported in August 2013 that Anna was spotted spending time in Nagorno-Karabakh, a disputed territory which is internationally recognized as Azerbaijan’s; she was seen with a group of Russian officials who came there to try and convince the Republic of Artsakh into resolving their conflict with Azerbaijan. Upon learning about her visit, the foreign ministry of Azerbaijan announced that Anna and other Russian visitors would no longer be welcome in Azerbaijan.

Anna has since been staying away from the media’s attention, and it’s only known that she visited Tsitsernakaberd in Armenia in 2015, which is a memorial built to honor the victims of the alleged Armenian genocide.

British citizenship revoked

After Anna was deported to Russia, she was planning to move to the UK and continue living there, however, under section 40 of the British Nationality Act 1981, her citizenship was revoked; this had happened to only around 15 other people since its introduction.

Modelling career

Anna became very popular in both the US and Russia after she was deported, and around the same time began working as a model, she could’ve been seen featured on the cover page of Russian “Maxim”, and Anna also walked the catwalk at the Moscow Fashion Week.

Love life and husband

Anna met her husband Alex Chapman in 2001, at a rave party at London Docklands; the two were together for around a year prior to exchanging vows in a private ceremony, attended by only their closest friends.

Alex was a musician and DJ; he and Anna divorced in 2006, and he died at the age of 36 in May 2015, after having overdosed on drugs.

It was reported in 2015 that Anna had given birth to her son at a private clinic in Moscow, but the boy’s name and his father remain undisclosed.

Since 2021, Anna has been in a relationship with the non-celebrity American man Brooklyn Denaro.

Hobbies and other interests

Anna’s today an Instagram star, and is followed by close to 600,000 people on the network, while she’s uploaded nearly 1,300 pictures, the majority of which have been taken during her everyday life, which reveal her to be a fashionista, and so a shopaholic, and that she goes shopping for clothes nearly every day.

Anna likes to travel, and has been all around the world for both work and pleasure, while her favorite city seems to be Venice, Italy.

She’s physically highly active, and works out at the gym four to five times every week.

Age, height and net worth

Anna’s age is 40. She has long brown hair and blue eyes, her height is 5ft 7ins (1.7m) and she weighs around 120lbs (60kgs).

As of April 2022, her net worth has been estimated at more than $1.5 million.
