Allegra’s uncle Gianni Versace
Giovanni Maria Versace was born in Reggio Calabria in Italy on 2 December 1946 – his zodiac sign was Sagittarius, and he held Italian and American nationality. Gianni was known worldwide for his career as a fashion designer, the founder of the Versace international fashion house.
Gianni was raised alongside his older brother Santo and younger sister Donatella in Reggio Calabria, by their father and their mother Francesca – he also had a sister named Tina who died due to an improperly treated tetanus infection at the age of 12. Gianni studied at Liceo Classico Tommaso Campanella.
He began working with his mother, who had a sewing business employing more than 10 seamstresses. Before he became a fashion designer, Gianni was interested in architecture. He opened his first boutique in Milan in 1972, and it didn’t take long for Versace to become part of the international fashion scene – when asked about his rivalry with Giorgio Armani, Gianni stated that ‘Armani dresses the wife, Versace dresses the mistress’. In 1978 Gianni employed his sister Donatella and brother Santo, and in 1982 expanded his business into jewelry and housewares.
He met his boyfriend D’Amico, a model, in 1982 and the two were together until Gianni was assassinated on 15 July 1997 – he was shot two times in the chest with a .40 caliber Taurus PT100 on the stairs of his Miami Beach mansion, just as he was coming back from his morning walk. The man who killed him, Andrew Cunanan, was a serial killer, murdering four men prior to killing Gianni – he commited suicide eight days after taking Gianni’s life.
Gianni’s body was cremated, and his remains are buried in the family vault at Moltrasio cemetery – his funeral was attended by more than 2,000 people, including Diana, Princess of Wales.
