Adam was mostly interested in playing sports while growing up, and he played football, basketball and tennis while attending a local high school. He excelled at baseball, and was around 16 years old when he chose to focus on becoming a professional baseball player.

Upon matriculating in 1989, Adam enrolled at Pepperdine University, and with the university’s baseball team competed in the 1992 National Champion College World Series. He spent two summers playing for Harwich of the Cape Cod League, and was named Junior Olympic All-American.
