From an early age Tracie has been interested in performance art, and when she was just 10 years-old she entered Baltimore School for the Arts. She subsequently enrolled at Howard University, from which she obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1997, and then continued her education at the Juilliard School’s Drama Division from 1997 until 2001, during which time she was a member of Group 30, with such future stars as Lee Pace and Anthony Mackie.

Tracie’s career started in 2002 with the role of Sasha in the TV series “As If”; after this, she continued with a couple of minor roles, but then in 2004 she had her first notable role, as Mahandra McGinty in the TV fantasy comedy-drama series “Wonderfalls”, starring next to Caroline Dhavernas, Katie Finneran and Tyron Leitso. Tracie enjoyed success throughout the second half of the 2000s, especially with the role of Kat Miller in the TV crime-drama series “Cold Case” (2005-2010). The role celebrated her as an actress, and so helped her secure other roles. Through 2010, Tracie also had roles in Quentin Tarantino’s film “Death Proof” (2007), starring Kurt Russell, Zoe Bell, and Rosario Dawson, then Jay DiPietro’s “Peter & Vandy” in 2009, with Jason Ritter, Jess Weixler, and Jesse L. 1 | The L.A. theater scene is very different. The perception has been that people who love theater do theater in New York. The people who want to be discovered do theater on the side in L.A. But there are people who are very dedicated to theater who love theater in L.A. |
2 | I think theater will always be my first love. I've been doing it since I was nine, and there's nothing quite like being on stage, having the immediate intake of energy and exchange of ideas. |
3 | People can graduate from beauty school and know everything about white hair and nothing about African-American hair. |
4 | African-Americans are always forced to learn the other culture, but the other culture is not forced to learn ours. I went to acting school at Juilliard, and we learned Shakespeare and Shaw, but we never did the work of a single African-American playwright, not August Wilson or Ntozake Shange or Imir Baraka. |
5 | I'm really looking forward to developing just really fun, complex, interesting stories about people who happen to be black. |
6 | I like shows that are ensemble-based, that explore the humanity of every character. |
