Early life and education
Martino was raised the only son in Vimianzo by his father Manuel Rivas who is a writer and a journalist, and his mother Maria Isabel Lopez Marino who is a housewife.
He attended a high school in London, England where he joined a drama class, and became interested in acting, winning his first roles in school plays. After matriculation, he returned to Spain and enrolled at the University of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 2007.
Martino grew up playing several sports, and was interested in learning languages, being fluent in Spanish, Galician and English – he’s been criticized for speaking Spanish with a Galician accent.
Career as an actor
He launched his acting career in 1998 at the age of 13, when he was cast to appear in the “Mareas Vivas” TVG series made in the Galician language.
He went on to feature in the “Puzzle” short film in 2004 shot in London, and then in “Maridos e Mulleres” TV series in 2005. He won his first regular role in “SMS: Sin miedo a sonar” TV series in 2006 and 2007, and was then invited to portray Marcos Novoa Pazos in “The Boarding School” in 2007, which is the role that made him famous. He was shooting for the series for three years, and in the meantime appeared in “The Blind Sunflowers” in 2008, and the “Universes” short film in 2009.
In 2013, he portrayed Pablo Escudero in the “El Don de Alba” TV series, and then featured in the “Romeo & Juliet” TV mini-series in 2014, playing the lead role as Romeo. His latest appearances have been in the “Las Chicas Del Cable” and “Se Quien Eres” TV series both shot in 2017.
Martino has been nominated for five awards winning three of them, – an EP3 Award for the best new actor for his performance in “The Blind Sunflowers”, an Islantilla Film Festival Award and a Viera de Plata Award for the best new actor for his performance in “The Boarding School”.
His other two nominations include for a Goya Award for the best new actor, and a New Talent of Spanish Cinema Award. Martino is also a model, who in 2010 became the ambassador for Purificacion Garcia, a Spanish fashion designer, while his first campaign was with Angela Molina for the 2010 Spring/Summer collection. Martino is a philanthropist, and has helped several charity organizations with their fundraisers, supporting the ONG Childhood Without Limits Foundation in 2007, together with Yon Gonzalez and Marta Torne, famous Spanish actor and actress.
He enjoys watching movies and TV series in his spare time, with his favorite actors and actresses being Antonio Banderas, Oscar Jaenada, and Penepole Cruz while some of his favorite movies are “The Mask of Zorro”, “Desperado”, and “Interview with the Vampire”. He has been physically active during the years and has several training sessions at the gym each week, thus his muscular body.
Martino likes to travel and has been all around Europe thanks to his acting career, while he mostly enjoyed the time he spent in London which is his dream travel destination. He has been to the US on several occasions, and although he hasn’t appeared in a single Hollywood movie, he has recently stated how it would be a dream come true for him to do that, and he is currently working on winning a role in a Hollywood film.
