He began reading comics at the age of five with his favorite being “Peanuts” – he started working on his own comics when he was six years old and won his first drawing competition after turning 11.
Scott attended the Windham Ashland Jewett Central School and enrolled at Hartwick College from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics in 1979 – he continued his education at the University of California, Berkeley and obtained a Master of Business Administration degree in 1986.

After that, he became a computer programmer, commercial lender, and a product manager before being promoted to a supervisor.
He created his famous “Dilbert” comic during these years – the idea for the name came from Mike Goodwin, his ex-boss – he used his family’s deceased pet Beagle dog Lucy as an idea for the Dogbert (original Dildog) character in the comic.
The comic failed to be published at first, but a letter from a fan motivated Scott to keep trying until he finally succeeded in 1989 with United Media, actually while working at Pacific Bell telephone company from 1986 to 1995. In 1991, his comic was syndicated to around 100 newspapers, while this climbed to 400 by 1994.
