At a young age, Mary J was exposed to music, thanks to his father who worked as a Jazz musician. However, her father left a few years after she was born, leaving their mother to care for the family, while also working as a nurse. Her father was troubled as he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD, due to his service during the Vietnam War. At a young age, she sang at church, which developed her skills. She then fell into drug and alcohol problems during her youth; she dropped out of high school, and began working with several artists, looking to find her big break.

In 1992 she released her first album entitled “What the 411?”, as an artist signed with Uptown Records. She started to gain mainstream attention soon afterwards, and two years later released the album entitled “My Life”, which is considered one of the greatest albums of all time. The album helped establish her as a star, and she continued to release hits in the coming years, making her one of the most successful female artists of her genre. She was the youngest and first female artist of Uptown at the time.

Mary J Blige’s Achievements

Blige would release a total of 13 studio albums, eight of which have been certified multi-platinum internationally. She has received numerous awards, including nine Grammy, 12 Billboard Music, and four American Music Awards. Personal Life

The singer previously worked as the secretary for her husband, and Blige said that he was spending a lot of money on her while also being physically abusive. The then-married couple were involved in several physical altercations during their two year battle for a divorce settlement. She consistently pushed for higher spousal support, and also accused him of being in a relationship with Starshell.
