He played tennis at high school, and began attending Tuskegee Institute on a tennis scholarship, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics 1972 – he was apparently planning on becoming a priest in the Episcopal Church, but eventually launched a career as a singer.

While attending Tuskegee, he created an R&B band, and in 1968 joined the Commodores as their singer and a saxophonist – the band released many albums which were recognizable by their funky sound, while Lionel started writing romantic songs and ballads such as “Three Times a Lady” and “Sail On”.

In 1978, he started writing songs for other musicians such the “Lady” song for Kenny Rogers, which topped the charts in 1980. In 1983, Lionel left the Commodores and was replaced by Skyler Jett.

He launched his solo career in 1982 with the release of his self-titled album which sold over four million copies, and Lionel soon became an international solo star. His most successful song was “Hello” which he released in 1984, while his other three big hits were “Running with the Night”, “Stuck on You”, and “Penny Lover”. Lionel was invited to perform on the main stage at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on 7 May 2006, and his eighth album, “Coming Home” was released four months later.

He became the host of his own show – “An Audience with Lionel Richie” – on 9 December 2006. Lionel is a phenomenon in several Arab states, especially in Egypt, Morocco and Libya where he has performed on multiple occasions. Brenda Harvey was Lionel’s college sweetheart, and the two married on 18 October 1975 – they began raising Nicole Camille Escovedo in 1983 when she was two years old, and legally adopted her in 1990.

Lionel is a philanthropist who has helped raise more than $3 million for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, and performed at the Foundation’s Soiree Bouquet in 2003 – his mother fought breast cancer when she was in her ‘80s, won the fight and lived to be 103 years old.
