Leslie grew up in the Jewish family of Herman and Josephine – he spent most of his childhood in Valley Stream in New York. He began winning roles in the university’s plays during his senior year, and after graduation moved to Manhattan to work on his acting career – he played in several TV series such as”Cannon” and “The Six Million Dollar Man”, before deciding to switch careers.
He started working for 20th Century Fox Television as the vice-president of mini-series and movies, and then at Saul Ilson Productions as the vice president of development, and Catalina Productions as their development executive.
In 1985, he began working for Lorimar Television as a development executive, becoming president in 1990. In the summer of 1993, he also became the CEO of Warner Bros. Television, and approved the filming of several TV series which became popular worldwide, including “ER” and “Friends”. Leslie left Lorimar in 1995 when he became president of CBS Entertainment, before becoming chairman and CEO in 2003.
