Born Lane Monte Kiffin on the 9th May 1975, in Lincoln, Nebraska USA, he is the son of Monte Kiffin, a famous American Football coach, and his wife Robin. He has a brother, Chris, who is also involved in American Football and is now the “Pass Rush Specialist” coach for the San Francisco 49ers. Lane went to Bloomington Jefferson High School in Minnesota, from which he matriculated in 1994. After high school, he enrolled at Fresno State, where he played football for the Bulldogs as a quarterback.

Career

Lane started his career as a graduate assistant for the Colorado State University team. This lasted just a year, before he was recruited by the Jacksonville Jaguars of the NFL, as their new quality control assistant. This also lasted a year, and then in 2001, he became the tight ends coach at the University of Southern California, under Pete Carroll. Lane remained at USC until 2006, during which time he covered several positions, including the wide receivers coach and offensive co-ordinator.

Oakland Raiders’ Youngest Head Coach

At just 31 years old, Lane was recruited by the Oakland Raiders and made their new head coach. Unfortunately, his time in Oakland wasn’t successful – in his first season, the Raiders had a record of just four wins and 12 losses, and due to continuing poor results, and tension between players, head coach and the owner, Al Davis, eventually resulted in Lane being fired over the telephone on the 30th September 2008.

Return to College Football

After his unsuccessful stint in NFL, Lane became the head coach of the University of Tennessee Volunteers, where he remained for only one season, and had a record of seven wins and six losses.

He left Tennessee for the University of Southern California, succeeding Pete Carroll, who left USC for the Seattle Seahawks of the NFL. Lane was the head coach of the USC from 2010 until 2013, and had the best season in 2011, with a record of 10 victories and just two lost games. However, the start of the 2013 season wasn’t great, which led to Lane’s firing.

The University of Alabama and Ole Miss

Since then, he’s been the offensive co-ordinator at the University of Alabama, and quarterback coach, which lasted from 2014 until 2016, when he took over the head coach position of the Florida Atlantic Owls team.

With them, he won C-USA Championships in 2017 and 2019, leading the team to No. 1 position in the conference, with records 11-3 and 10-3. However, he left Alabama in early December 2019, and had talks with the University of Mississippi football team. On the 9th December he was named the 39th head coach of Ole Miss on a four-year contract worth $16.2 million.
