Melissa grew up in Kansas after her parents moved there when she was two years old. She attended a local high school, and after matriculation enrolled at the University of Kansas where she became passionate about comedy, writing her first jokes there. She graduated in 1982.

Career as an actress

While she was still attending University, Melissa was writing jokes for a morning radio show, and ventured into stand-up comedy performing at several clubs and pubs around the state. Upon graduation, she moved to Hollywood to pursue a career in comedy, and hoping to become an actress. Throughout the ‘80s, she worked at the Comedy Store located in Sunset Boulevard – her first notable project which helped her gain recognition was in “Real Stories of the Donut Men” comedy film shot in 1997. The movie is a mockumentary on the “Cops” TV series, and follows a filmmaker as he creates a mockumentary about the police who harassed him.

In 1999, she starred alongside Jim Carrey in the “Man on the Moon” movie. which follows Andy Kaufman (Jim) as he grows up and becomes famous; although the film itself received negative critiques, Jim was praised for his performance. In 2004, Melissa appeared in “The Yesterday Show with John Kerwin”, but it ended after only two episodes. In 2007, she was cast to appear in the “S.O.B.: Socially Offensive Behavior” comedy series with star D. L.
