Career Beginnings
Hey Violet was formed as Cherri Bomb while Rena was in middle school; the members were lead singer and guitar player Julia Pierce, but she left the band in 2013, then Nia Lovelis and Miranda Miller. Three years later, they got their first contract, signing with Hollywood Records in June 2011. They started working on their debut EP, and a few months later released “Stark”, but struggled to make a major impact on the music scene.
They started touring with such rock and alternative bands as Foo Fighters, Bush, The Smashing Pumpkins and Steel Panther among others, and even got to play in Europe at festivals in Ireland, Reading and Leeds, among others.
Following the end of the tour, the band hit the studio and started working on their debut album, which came out under the title “This Is the End of Control” on the 15th May 2012. At the time, the band still went under the name Cherri Bomb.
Rise to Prominence
Julia Pierce left the band after misunderstandings with other band members on what way the band should continue. As a result, there were several online statements, both by the rest of the band and Julia herself. Rena then assumed the position of lead singer, and they added Casey Moreta as their permanent lead guitarist. The band toured for a while, before changing their name to Hey Violet, and released their EP “I Can Feel It” (2015), which reached No. 2 on the US Heatseekers chart, while it also appeared on the US Billboard 200 chart, reaching No. 149.
The next release was their third EP – “Brand New Moves” – in 2016, while it was in June of 2017 that the band released their second album, and first under the new name, entitled “From the Outside”. The album reached No. 2 on the US Heatseekers chart and No. 110 on the US Billboard 200 chart, spawning such hits as “Guys My Age”, “Break My Heart”, and “Hoodie”. Most recently, Rena and the band have worked on new material, and released several singles in 2019, including “Better By Myself”, “Queen of the Night”, and “Clean” to critical acclaim, making Rena and the entire band stars.
Over the years, they have seen a few changes in the line-up, as Miranda Miller left the band too, stating that she couldn’t handle the duration of their tours, and they also had a male member, Ian Shipp, who was with the band from 2016 until 2019 when he left the band after sexual assault allegations.
