Who is Luke Thompson?
British actor Luke Thompson was born in Southampton, England, on 4 July 1988, making Cancer his zodiac sign. He has 14 acting credits, and is perhaps known best for playing Warrant Officer in the critically acclaimed 2017 historical action movie “Dunkirk”, which starred Barry Keoghan and Fionn Whitehead, and was written and directed by Christopher Nolan. Set during World War II, the film follows a group of Allied soldiers who’ve been surrounded by the German Army, and it won 65 of its 297 award nominations, including three Oscar wins for Best Achievement in Sound Editing, Best Achievement in Film Editing, and Best Achievement in Sound Mixing.
Luke’s today highly active in the movie industry, and is currently shooting for the upcoming film “A Little Life”.
Education and early life
Luke was raised alongside his two siblings in France, as the family moved there when he was two years old; his mother was a high school teacher, and his father an engineer.
Luke studied at Lycée International François-Ier, and became passionate about acting during his eight years there; he matriculated in 2005, a year earlier than his peers, and in 2006 returned to England on his own. He spent the year 2007 performing with the Year Out Drama Company, and then enrolled at the University of Bristol, but eventually transferred to the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2013.
Roles in movies
Luke’s debut film role was playing Lysander in the 2014 comedy “Shakespeare’s Globe: A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, then the year 2015 saw him play Mark Antony in the historical drama “Globe on Screen: Julius Caesar”.
In 2016, Luke starred as Romeo in the short drama “The Complete Walk: Romeo and Juliet”, and was then cast to play Laertes in the 2018 drama “Hamlet”, which starred Juliet Stevenson and Andrew Scott, written by Shakespeare, and directed by Rhodri Huw and Robert Icke; it follows Hamlet, Prince of Denmark who’s returned home to learn that his father’s been murdered, and that his mother’s married his murderer.
Luke portrayed Edgar in the 2018 historical drama “National Theatre Live: King Lear”, and the year 2019 saw him play the lead character Oliver Bell in the drama “Making Noise Quietly”, which also starred Barbara Marten and Matthew Tennyson, and was directed by Dominic Dromgoole; it follows the lives of several civilians during wartime.
Luke’s only other film role has been playing Peter Hain in the popular 2020 historical comedy “Misbehaviour”, which starred Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Keira Knightley, and was directed by Philippa Lowthorpe. It follows a group of women who are planning to disrupt London’s 1970 Miss World beauty pageant, and the movie won three of its seven award nominations.
Roles in TV series
Luke’s debut TV series role was playing Joshua Hallows in the 2014 episode “The Suspicions of Mr Whicher: The Ties That Bind” of the crime mystery “The Suspicions of Mr Whicher”, and from 2014 through 2016, he starred as Simon in all 12 episodes of the drama “In the Club”. It starred Hermione Norris and Katherine Parkinson, was created by Kay Mellor and follows the lives of several couples who are about to become parents.
In 2018, Luke played Connor in two episodes of the science fiction mystery mini-series “Kiss me First”, which starred Simona Brown and Tallulah Haddon, and follows a video game addict who’s fallen for a girl whom he’s met in the online world of Azana.
From 2020 through 2022, Luke portrayed Benedict Bridgerton in 18 episodes of the historical romantic drama “Bridgerton”, which stared Nicola Coughlan and Julie Andrews, and was created by Chris Van Dusen. It follows the lives of eight Bridgerton siblings, and the series won 13 of its 86 award nominations.
Luke’s only other TV series role has been portraying Hiram ‘Harry’ Bingham in six episodes of the 2023 historical mini-series “Transatlantic”, which starred Lucas Englander and Gillian Jacobs, and was created by Daniel Hendler and Anna Winger; it follows an American journalist who helped more than 2,000 refugees move from France to the USA in 1940 and 1941.

In 2022, Luke made a guest appearance in an episode of the talk-shows “The Morning Show” and “Hollywood First Look”.
Awards and nominations
Luke was nominated for a 2021 Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, for “Bridgerton”.
Love life and relationships
Even though Luke’s highly secretive when it comes to speaking about his love life in public, most of his fans believe that he’s today in a relationship with Irish actress Nicola Coughlan. The two met on the set of the series “Bridgerton” and have since been seen spending time together in public on a number of occasions; they’ve also uploaded pictures, which feature them together onto their Instagram accounts, but neither has confirmed that they’re romantically linked.
There are also some who believe Luke to be gay, but he hasn’t addressed these rumors either.
Luke might be in a relationship with Nicola Coughlan as of June 2023, he hasn’t married and doesn’t have children.

Being as secretive about his private life as he is, Luke doesn’t have an Instagram account; there is, however, a fan-made page which is today followed by close to 10,000 people, while 29 pictures and videos have been uploaded onto it.
Luke enjoys being physically active, and works out at the gym several times every week; he also likes to go for a run early in the morning.
He loves animals; Luke volunteered at a French animal shelter during his teenage years.
