Born as Lenard Larry McKelvey, on the 29th June 1978, in Charleston, South Carolina USA. He is the son of Jehovah Witnesses, but has only revealed his father’s name, Larry Thomas McKelvey, who converted to Islam. His mother was an English teacher. Charlamagne spent his childhood in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, and it was during his teenage years that his life took a turn for the worse. He began selling drugs, and twice ended up in jail after he was caught with marijuana and cocaine.
His third time in prison was because he was sitting in the back seat of a car when a shooting occurred, and refused to co-operate with the police. His father declined to post bail, so Charlamagne tha God spent 41 days in jail before his mother came good with bail money.
Career Start
Charlamagne then entered night school, and accepted his chance as a radio intern. Over the years, he created the stage persona Charlamagne tha God, drawing inspiration for the name from his drug dealer pseudonym Charles and the Western European ruler King Charlemagne.
He eventually got a position next to Wendy Williams, and co-hosted the radio show with her, but as the time went on, a rift between her and his way of conducting interviews appeared, which resulted in him being fired from the show in 2008. This turned out to be an excellent thing for the emerging radio host with a critical mind; with DJ Envy and Angela Yee, he started the radio show “The Breakfast Club”, which started airing on WWPR-FM, and after three years got into syndication.
Becoming a Star
Charlamagne has now become a radio star, and “The Breakfast Club” has reached 90 radio markets; furthermore, since 2014 the show is televised by REVOLT. Because of his personality, he has ben involved in numerous controversies with several celebrities, including rappers Lil’ Mama, Birdman, and Lil Duval, and also Democratic Presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren. As his career on radio improved, he decided to try himself on other media, and in 2011 he became a cast member of the show “Guy Code”, which lasted until 2015. He also served as the host of the show “MTV’s Hip Hop POV” (2012), and most recently launched another show, “Untold Stories of Hip Hop” (2019). On YouTube, Charlemagne tha God is the host of “Emerging Hollywood”, which can be found on “The Hollywood Reporter” official YouTube channel. Charlemagne tha God is also an author, having published two books so far.
