Early Life and Education: Moving Around

Robbie Kay was born to Ivan and Stephanie Kay in Lymington – neither his mother nor father are native to the town, as they are from Newcastle (upon Tyne) and Peterborough, respectively. In addition to Robbie, the Kay family also consists of his two older sisters, Camilla and Fiona.

Even though they liked life in rural England, they soon moved to Brussels, Belgium, but not for long, as in 2006 when Robbie was 11 years old, the family moved yet again, this time to Prague, in the Czech Republic. Despite the shock he felt due to his new surroundings, it was precisely this change of scenery that helped him become an actor.

Apparently, it all happened when he was attending the International School of Prague, an institution for foreign students. He saw a note on the school’s announcement board, looking for English-speaking extras below the age of 13. Despite not having even a shred of acting experience, Robbie amazed everyone at the audition, which resulted in a speaking part in the movie “The Illusionist”; unfortunately, his scenes were removed from the final cut.

Career Beginning: Hannibal Rising, Fugitive Pieces, My Boy Jack

Because of its immense beauty and picturesque architecture, Prague is a major European hub for actors and directors, resulting in a lot of movies being shot there. After meeting Edward Norton, the star of “The Illusionist”, Robbie quickly fell in love with acting and wanted to make the most of his surroundings. In 2007, he decided to go all in, as he appeared in “Hannibal Rising”, “Fugitive Pieces” and “My Boy Jack”, which is a remarkable number of credits in one year, even for more seasoned actors.

Despite being only 12 years old, critics quickly noticed him and his immense potential.  In her “Fugitive Pieces” review on the site Chatelaine, Alixia Cox wrote: ‘Robbie Kay, who plays the young Jakob, gives a remarkable performance with little [sic] words and a lot of emotion.

When he smiles (which isn’t often) you can’t help but be affected.‘ 2008 was also successful for him, with “Bathory” and “In Bruges” furthering his reputation even more. At the 30th annual Young Artists Awards, Robbie was nominated for two awards, one for “Pinocchio” and the other for “Fugitive Pieces”.

Sustained Success: Pirates of the Caribbean, Ways to Live Forever and More

After taking some time off in 2009, Robbie was back with a vengeance. He dominated 2010 with an appearance in “Made in Dagenham”, a critically acclaimed movie about the famous 1968 strike at the Ford Dagenham car factory. With an emphasis on feminism and workers’ rights, the movie caused quite a stir, and did wonders for Robbie’s popularity.

In “Ways to Live Forever”, he delivered his best performance to date, playing a boy who has leukemia, which doesn’t stop him from chasing his dreams and making the best of the time he has left. 2011 marked another change for Kay, as he and his family moved across the pond to Houston, Texas, where Robbie still resides to this day. Upon his relocation, we could see him assuming the role of Cabin Boy in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”, which propelled him to stardom as the movie was a global success. Afterwards, he took a break from acting to complete his education and make a plan for future endeavors.

Expanding His Repertoire: Heroes Reborn, Once Upon a Time and More

In 2015, Robbie joined the cast of “Heroes Reborn”, a popular TV show which was inspired by Marvel’s “X-Men” franchise, and based around people with unusual powers. The mini-series lasted for only 13 episodes, with Robbie’s character – Tommy Clark – a fan favorite throughout the show’s duration.

After this accomplishment, we could see Kay in “Cold Moon” and “Grey’s Anatomy”, with subsequent appearances in “Sleepy Hollow”, “No Postage Necessary” and several other works. However, from 2013 to 2018, Robbie amazed audiences around the world as Peter Pan in the hit show “Once Upon a Time”.

Funnily, he wasn’t a fan of the show before he was offered to play the legendary fairytale character. ‘To be honest, Peter Pan was one of those fairy tales that I sort of related to, and I think that’s the case with a lot of kids’, commented Kay. ‘The whole idea of escapism really resonates with a lot of kids.’ His more recent appearances include Simon Parks Jr. in “The Rookie”, and Mack in “Locating Silver Lake”.
