Otto Kilcher comes from a Swiss family that immigrated to the US, Alaska during World War II. He is the sixth child of eight, born on 19 April 1952, in Fritz Creek, Alaska, to parents Yule and Ruth Kilcher.

From his childhood, Otto developed an interest in fixing many devices at home. This experience of tinkering around has proven to be of great importance in his future life, because Otto later opened a mechanic shop, and taught his kids his profession.
Being in a remote place, Otto had to grow up getting used to no electricity or running water, when the family lived in a small log cabin outside Homer, depending on farming, fishing, and herding to make their living.
Otto grew up in a musical family, and singing and playing instruments were common in his youth; his brother and his nephew became musicians in their later lives.

He and his wife share a lot of their activities in the homestead. According to their website, Otto is still fixing broken things, raising cattle, hunting and farming. Charlotte takes care of the garden, milking the cows and taking care of the chickens. They live an almost self-sufficient life in their place.
