She had always been interested in acting and after high school enrolled at Boston University, from which she obtained a bachelor’s degree in fine arts. During her university years, Maura honed her skills in local theater and university plays as well.

It was in 1995 that Maura’s career started; spotted by a casting director while she was performing in one of the university productions, she was offered the role of Carly which she accepted, marking the start of her professional career. She made her screen debut on the 11th of April 1995, and portrayed Carly until the 8th May 1996, when she took a hiatus because of her pregnancy.
