Early life and family
Joseph Daniel “Joey” Kern was born on 5 September 1976, in Independence, northern Kentucky USA, under the sign of Virgo, and holding American nationality. Not much is known about his family except that he probably has several siblings, as he once shared he has nine nieces and nephews, and even wrote jokingly that he sometimes forgot their names, and ‘has to look it up in his “Names of My Sibling’s Children tome”.
He also shared a photo of his mother on his Instagram account, however, he didn’t mention her name, age or occupation, so nothing is known about his parents. It is known that he has a brother named Kevin Kern, who’s a Broadway actor.
Educational background
Joey matriculated from St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati in 1995, then entered New York University, graduating with Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in drama. He then took acting and drama classes at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA), located in London – one of the honored fellows of the Academy is Sir Anthony Hopkins, while Alan Rickman was the vice-chairman of the Academy until his death in 2016.
Career
Acting on stage
After his successful study at RADA, Joey apparently started his acting career with his debut on stage in productions of the Atlantic Theater Company. He also played in productions of “Theater for a New Audience” and “New Group Theater”, appearing as Silver Johnny in “Mojo” in 1997, directed by Neil Pepe and based on the Jez Butterworth novel. He also played Foxtrot Darling in “The Fastest Clock in the Universe” (1998), and landed the role of Mike in the “Saved” production of TFANA (Theatre for a New Audience), based on the play of Edward Bond. Joey also played Troilus in “Troilus and Cressida” (2001) and Bucky in Second Stage Theater’s production of “Spanish Girl” (2002).
Acting in the movies and series
Joey debuted on the screen in the 1999 film “The Virgin” (“Die Jungfrau”), playing the role of Konrad. Right afterwards he had a minor role in the super popular TV series “Sex and the City” (1998 – 2004) in which he played Garth in the episode “Boy, Girl, Boy, Girl” in 2000. He continued with minor roles in such films as “Super Troopers” (2001) and “Cabin Fever” (2002). He also played Fitzgerald in “Love the Hard Way” (2001), and Tye in “Garmento” (2002).
Joey also had major roles in such movies as “All the Days Before Tomorrow” (2007), in which he landed the role of Wes, and in “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Undead” (2009), as the Real Hamlet.
He also played in the series “Key and Peele” (2012 – 2015), “Sketchy” (2015 – present), “Chosen” (2013 – present), and several others. His latest acting works have been appearing in “A Beginner’s Guide to Snuff” (2016) in the role of Dresden Winters, “The Love Inside” (2015) as Joel, and “Bloodsucking Bastards” (2015) playing Tim.
Directing career
Since 2016 Joey has sharpened his directing skills; his debut was in the drama series “Good Behavior” (2016 – 2017), in which he also starred with Michelle Dockery. The series had two season, with positive feedback from critics and audience. In 2017 Joey wrote the scenery for the series “Big Bear”, and was both the leading actor and director for the story which was based on his broken engagement with his former colleague, the actress Gennifer Goodwin.
Carpenter career
It’s hard to believe, but Joey’s passion for crafting poured out into his own wooden and fabric crafting company. He owns “KernKrafted”, and produces various pieces of furniture, such as tables, coffee tables, consoles and even in-door swings.
Personal life, wife Gillian Rose
Joey was quite secretive about his personal life, however he announced that he’d started dating his colleague, actress Gennifer Goodwin at the beginning of 2009. The couple seemed to be doing well, and even announced their engagement on Christmas Eve 2010, however, they eventually broke up in May 2011, never revealing the real reason for their split. Joey didn’t confirm it, but the break-up was probably really painful, as he even sublimated it in the scenery of his series “Big Bear”.
It took Joey a couple of years to recover from a painful separation, but in 2014 he married Gillian Rose, a model and actress. The couple has welcomed two daughters, Lilifaye Lou born on 3 March 2016, and Rosie Irene on 13 January 2018.
Who is Gillian Rose Kern?
Gillian Rose was born on 10 February 1985. Her parents ran a ski bar in Jackson, Wyoming, living a life full of parties and events. She often spent her summers with her family on a boat in The Bahamas , on which they caught all their food and took ‘showers’ in the ocean. Eventually her parents split, and she had to overcome their break-up, which wasn’t easy, though they tried to stay friends.
Gillian lived in Australia for a year with her friend Laura, with whom she created the apparel brand “For Love & Lemons” – she acts as a model as well as designer for the brand, and is still doing that in 2024, also participating in the catwalk shows.

According to his Instagram account, Joey enjoys travelling a lot, and has visited such interesting places as Shanghai and other Asian cities. He likes spending quality time with his family, as they need his attention now even more they did before – Joey now has three beautiful girls to take care of. Joey enjoys Italian cuisine – pasta, pizza, and seafood.
Social media presence
Joey is very active on Instagram, but doesn’t have Twitter or Facebook profiles. His wife’s account is closed to the random viewer, though it has almost 500 subscribers. Joey also has a separate account for his company, “KernKrafted”.
Appearance, clothing style
Joey has short, light brown hair and hazel eyes. He’s 5ft 11ins (1.80m) tall and weighs around 187lbs (85kgs); his vital statistics are not available.

Assigned to projects such as “Dead End” in which he landed the role of Dom, and “Useless Humans” in which Joey played Zachary, his net worth is only going to grow.
