Who is Peter Bergman?
Peter Michael Bergman was born on 11 June 1953, in Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba, and is an actor, best known for his portrayal of the character Jack Abbott in the show “The Young and the Restless”, a role which he has been playing since 1989. He’s also played the character Dr. Cliff Warner in “All My Children”.
The Riches of Peter Bergman
Peter’s net worth that is over $10 million, earned through a successful career in acting. He’s been in the entertainment industry since 1979, mainly working on television projects.
Early Life and Career Beginnings
Peter’s father was a US Navy officer, and like many military families, they moved around a lot, leading him to eventually take up his high school education in Camp Springs, Maryland, at Crossland Senior High School. After matriculating from high school, he began pursuing acting projects, determined to find a career in the field.
He initially auditioned for the role of Dr. Jeff Martin in the show “All My Children”, which led to one of his first and most notable roles as Dr. Cliff Warner, a character he played from 1979 to 1989.
The soap opera actually ran for 41 years on ABC, and was at one point one of the most recorded television shows in the US. During the early years of its run, it was defined as a show that departed from societal norms, and so was at the top for most of the 1980s and early1990s. The show was later cancelled due to dwindling ratings. During his time with the show, his character married Taylor Miller’s character four times, with their fourth marriage intact by the time they left the show.
The Young and the Restless
While portraying a doctor on television, he became a part of a Vicks Formula 44 advertising campaign during the late 1980s, in which he had to declare that he is not an official doctor, due to a rule which banned people from portraying doctors in commercials without a disclaimer. After leaving “All My Children”, he was then cast as Jack Abbott in the soap “The Young and the Restless”. The soap is set in a fictionalized Genoa City, Wisconsin and initially focused on two core families, the working class Foster family, and the wealthy Brooks family.
Due to departures and recasts, many of the original characters were written out with the exception of Jill Foster. More families were also introduced including the Abbotts, the Barber-Winters, Newmans, and Williamses. The show boasts having the longest rivalry on any American soap opera. Over the course of its run, it has won 10 Daytime Emmy Awards and is the current highest rated daytime drama in the US. It is a sister show to “The Bold and the Beautiful”.
Other Projects
While working on “The Young and the Restless”, Peter also took on other acting projects. In 1991, he appeared in the television movie of Danielle Steel’s “Palamino” based on the novel of the same name. Six years later, he portrayed his character Jack Abbott while making a guest appearance in “The Nanny”, which gained a bit of attention as he shared an on-screen kiss with Pamela Anderson.
He also reprised his role in two episodes of “The Bold and the Beautiful”. The soap is known for having several characters cross to and from “The Young and the Restless”. It is set in Los Angeles and follows the Forrester family as they manage a fashion house business. The show is also successful, winning 31 Daytime Emmy Awards during its run, including three Outstanding Drama Series from 2009 to 2011. It is the youngest airing daytime soap in the US.
One of Bergman’s last known other projects is a guest role in “The King of Queens” ,in which he portrayed Jack Abbott once more. The show aired on CBS and starred Kevin James and Carrie Heffernan.
Personal Life
Bergman married actress Christine Ebersole in 1976, but they stayed together only until 1981, when they divorced. She is known for her work in the musical “42nd Street” which won her a Tony Award, and her appearance in “Grey Gardens”, which earned her a second Tony.
Four years after the divorce, he married Mariellen Bergman – they have two children together.
He mentioned once that he is a big fan of Disney animated movies, particularly “The Little Mermaid” and “Frozen”. He’s spent most of his time as Jack Abbott and has expressed his love for playing the character, though in recent years he has not gained any guest roles as the character.
