Darya began walking the path of an athlete when she was eight years old – she started playing volleyball and was very good at it, however, she got bored with it by the time she turned 13, and switched to athletics, long jump to be specific.

She had the full support of her father who was a long jumper as well during his 20s, so there was nothing to stop Darya from striving in the long jump contests. She went on to attend high school but remained mostly focused on sports.

After she matriculated, Darya completely focused on her career as a long jumper, and decided not to enroll on college – her parents somewhat disagreed, but still allowed her to do whatever she wanted.

Career of a long jumper

Darya set her first record on 26 June 2010 when she jumped 7.03m – it was the best Russian junior jump and the second-best junior jump of all time, and the second-longest in the whole world – even though everyone was expecting Darya to compete at the 2010 World Junior Athletics Championships, she wasn’t selected.

She kept exercising during the next six years and competed at smaller contests before she was selected to compete at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Summer Olympics – the IAAF organization suspended Russia from competing because some of their competitors were caught doping, however, they changed their decision on 13 August 2016 for athletes proven to be ‘clean’, allowing Darya to compete.

She went on to win ninth place, but it was the first time in over 20 years that a girl from Russia didn’t manage to win a medal in the long jump discipline.

Darya’s last notable appearance was at the 2017 World Athletics Championships held in London where she won a silver medal, just two centimeters behind Brittney Reese who jumped 7.02m.

Darya follows specific exercises for people who compete in the long jump discipline, while she also does bodyweight movements and gym exercises. Some of her favorite exercises include front squats, dumbbell step-ups, and counter-movement.
