Early Life and Education: From Mississippi to Texas

Candice was born into an American family in Mississippi. She is of mixed heritage, as her mother, Arianna is African-American, while her father, Paul Patton, has European roots. While Paul was an engineer by profession, art was his true passion. As a child, he learned to play multiple instruments, but never wanted to pursue a music career. Candice’s mother, is an opera singer. She and her would-be husband met after one of her performances, and immediately started dating, and married after welcoming their first child, Adrian, to the world. Soon after they had Candice, they made the decision to relocate to Plano, Texas, possibly for work-related reasons.

Even though both of her parents were talented musicians, their marriage wasn’t marked by harmony. They divorced when Candice was five, but maintained an amicable relationship. She often went to stay at her father’s house, where she first developed an interest in acting. In 2003, Patton matriculated from Plano East Senior High School, then enrolled at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, where she obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2007, majoring in Theater.

Career Beginnings: The Young and The Restless, Sorority Forever, Entourage and More

Interestingly, acting wasn’t even Candice’s first choice. She aspired to be a cheerleader, but an injury to her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) derailed her dreams of competing in the sport. Only then did she start harboring an increased love for acting, mainly because of her admiration of Lucille Ball. During her freshman year in college, she saw an ad for CBS’s Soap Star Contest, a series of auditions which would ultimately decide who would appear in “The Young and the Restless”, one of the most popular soap operas of the early 2000s. After several months of trials, she won the contest alongside Ethan Rains. Patton appeared in five episodes of the show, but wasn’t willing to jeopardize her college education with any more roles. After graduating in 2007, she appeared in another iconic soap opera – “The Bold and the Beautiful”, then her big breakthrough came in 2008, as Mercedes Luna in “Sorority Forever”. 2009 saw her in “Castle”, “Entourage” and in “Days of Our Lives”, making her one of the most sought-after supporting actresses in soap operas.

2010 started off well for this rising star, as she landed roles in “One Tree Hill, “Grey’s Anatomy” and “The Forgotten”. Her soap opera experience came in handy for these particular parts, but she also wanted to try something new. Thus, in 201, she made her movie debut in “The Craigslist Killer”, a crime drama based on a true story. It seems like this change of scenery didn’t suit her, as she didn’t appear in too many movies afterwards, however, she rose up the ranks of Hollywood’s elite, assuming parts in highly popular shows such as “Harry’s Law”, “CSI: Miami”, “Love Bites” and even “Man Up”. There is a funny story involving her audition for the part – apparently she was nervous in front of the selection panel, and messed up a line in which she was supposed to mention actor Channing Tatum. They weren’t pleased with her performance, and at that time Keke Palmer and Ciara Renee were considered favorites to land the role. However, the second audition was a whole other story.
