Who is Brad Rutter?

Bradford Gates ‘Brad’ Rutter was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania USA, on 31 January 1978 – his zodiac sign is Aquarius, and he holds American nationality. He’s a game-show host, contestant, producer, and an actor, who’s probably known best for having competed in numerous game-shows, and for having won over $5 million, making him the second highest-earning game-show contestant in the US, behind American game-show host, author and TV presenter Ken Jennings.

Early life and education

Brad was raised in Lancaster alongside his older brother, by their father Greg and mother Pam Greenwalk; not a lot is known about Brad’s parents, as he respects their privacy, but it’s believed that his father was a high school teacher, and that his mother was a registered nurse.

Brad studied at Manheim Township High School in Neffsville, Pennsylvania, and was on the school’s quiz bowl team during all his four years there, and finished runners-up at the 1994 Texaco Star National Academic Championship.

He matriculated in 1996, and although Brad didn’t initially want to attend college, his parents persuaded him to enroll at Johns Hopkins University, after he was offered a scholarship; he studied English for two years prior to dropping out.

Competing in the game-show “Jeopardy!”

Brad competed in “Jeopardy!” for the first time on 30 October 2000; the show was created by Merv Griffin back in 1984, and features a returning champion and two challengers who are testing their knowledge in various popular and academic categories.

Back then, the rules were that a contestant who had won five days in a row would retire undefeated; Brad succeeded at this and received $55,102, as well as two Chevrolet Camaro cars.

He faced other five-day champions stint in the 2001 Tournament of Champions, which he won and took home $100,000; Brad then competed in the 2002 Million Dollar Masters Tournament, winning again, this time $1 million.

The rules of the game-show changed in 2003, meaning that contestants didn’t have to retire after five consecutive wins. In 2004, Ken Jennings went on to win 74 days in a row, thus becoming the largest money winner on “Jeopardy!”

In 2005, Brad competed in the Ultimate Tournament of Champions, winning it and brining home $2.1 million, having also defeated Ken Jennings in the tournament.

He went on to win the 2014 “Jeopardy! Battle of the Decades”, which had the champions from the previous three decades compete to win $1 million.

In 2019, Brad, Dave Madden and Larissa Kelly won “Jeopardy! All-Star Games”, splitting the $1 million prize.

Brad placed third in the game-show “Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time” in January 2020, winning $250,000.

Other game-shows

On 1 December 2006, Brad was a member of ‘the Mob’ in the game-show “1 vs. 100”, and he returned to the show on 8 December 2006; he gave the correct answer to every question and thus progressed to the next show, where he was eliminated after failing to answer correctly a question about reggae singer Matisyahu.

He then went on to compete in the game-show “Grand Slam”, losing in the second round to the American writer Ogi Ogas.

Brad finished 140th in the 2010 game-show “World Quizzing Championship”.

He and his team won $600,000 in the game-show “Million Dollar Mind Game”, on 27 November 2011.

Brad was the in-person lifeline for the Canadian actress and comedienne Catherine Anne O’Hara, when she competed in the game-show “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” in May 2020. He helped Catherine answer the first 10 questions correctly, and she then chose to trade her ’50:50’ option for another consultation with Brad. He then helped Catherine answer the $125,000 question correctly, and she eventually walked away with $250,000.
