Awsten has disclosed that he was bullied during his childhood years, due to having different colored eyes so that children referred to him as “The Devil.” He considered it as an opportunity to grow-up and become more self-aware, as he deems vital for being in a band. After matriculating, he attended college but eventually left after a few semesters to pursue his dream of being a musician. Allegedly, Awsten has procured a doctorate from the State University of Sheffield, Ohio.

In September 2019 he uploaded two photos of himself and his friend Elijah Daniel onto Instagram, wearing green graduation caps and gowns with the caption ‘WE’RE OFFICIALLY GRADUATES! TOURING DIDN’T STOP ME FROM GETTING MY PHD SO NOTHING CAN STOP YOU FROM DOING ANYTHING EXCEPT TELEPORTATION, U JUST CANNOT DO THAT.’

However, sceptics are not sure if this is real – the university does offer a “Degree of Deception” that can be bought.

Family’s personal life

Awsten keeps his family private, but he has Irish, German, French and Greek heritage. He hasn’t revealed his parents’ names, but has mentioned that he lets his family and friends listen to his work to judge if they approve of it, and ensure there is no repetition.

Career

Awsten first started the band The Blue Poptarts, with Otto Wood and other members.

In 2011, along with Owen Marvin and Gage Matthieu, Awsten formed Waterparks – they released their first EP entitled “Airplane Conversations” on 3 April 2012, and on 17 August 201, the band performed their first show at Warehouse Live in Houston, along with other renowned musicians such as Animate, Life as Lions, Invent and DWHB. Not long after this performance, Owen and Gage both left the band, and Otto Wood and Geoff Wigington joined – Awsten met Geoff through Gage.

Waterparks are characterized as being pop-rock, alternative rock, pop-punk and electropop, however, it incorporates elements of indie, hip hop, punk, jazz and electronic music.

The band played all through Texas in local venues, and eventually got the opportunity on 11 May 2013 to be the support act for Aaron Carter on his Houston tour date. They also showcased their talent during the Vans Warped Tour on the Houston dates in 2013 and 2015.

Following the release of their second EP, “Black Light” in 2014, the band signed up with the record label “Equal Vision Records”, and were afforded the chance to choose Benji and Joel Madden from Good Charlotte as their producers.

On 19 November 2015, Good Charlotte played a comeback show at “The Troubadour” in West Hollywood, California, and they allowed Waterparks to perform with them.

Awsten Knight

Awsten and his band members released their third EP, entitled “Cluster,” on 15 January 2016. Benji Madden co-produced the album, and the bass for the EP was played by the bassist of My Chemical Romance, Mikey Way. Waterpark’s debut album was released on 4 November 2016 and entitled “Double Dare.” Meantime, the band supported Never Say Never on the Black Cat Tour, and Sleeping with Sirens on their End The Madness tour, then also returned to the Vans Warped Tour that year, and performed on every date.

Waterparks were one of the support acts for All Time Low on their tour of Ireland and the UK in March 2017 joining fellow bands The Wrecks and SWMRS. They rejoined All Time Low later that year for their Young Renegades tour in the US.

On 26 January 2018, the band released their second studio album entitled “Entertainment”, which reached #98 on the Billboard 200 chart. Waterparks announced on 23 May 2019 that they had left Equal Vision Records and signed with “Hopeless Records” through who they released their third studio album, “Fandom” on 11 October 2019.

Waterparks won Best International Breakthrough Artist at “The Rock Sound Awards” and Best Breakthrough Artist at the “Alternative Press Music Awards” in 2017. That same year they were also nominated for Album of the Year, for “Double Dare,” and Song of the Year, for “Stupid for You,” at the “Alternative Press Music Awards.”

In addition to being the lead singer of Waterparks, Awsten has written and published a book entitled “You’d Be Paranoid Too (if Everyone Was Out To Get You).” Awsten wrote the book once he returned from the band’s “Entertainment” tour, and said that he began writing it to keep busy when he felt ‘super, super depressed.’

The book was published on 10 June 2019 through MDDN Publishing, a company started and ran by Benji and Joel Madden.

Awsten also has a side rap project – “Felony Steve” – and has released a couple of satirical songs under this name. He has also released electronic rap under the name “Lil Kidz Bop.”

Personal life

Awsten dated a girl named Grace from 2011 until the end of 2015 when they ultimately broke up. Grace and Otto Wood appear to have begun dating not long after Awsten and her broke up, but only confirmed it in January 2016.

Awsten then started dating Ciara Hanna, known for her portrayal as the yellow Power Ranger in Power Rangers Megaforce, in 2016.  They broke up in 2017 after Awsten discovered that Ciara was cheating on him. He wrote and uploaded a song to YouTube after their break-up, but has subsequently removed it from the site.

Awsten prefers not to discuss his personal and dating life in interviews, but instead speaks about it in his songs, with several of those on “Fandom” being about his breakup with Ciara.

Hobbies, favorite things and interesting facts

In January of 2018, Awsten started co-hosting a podcast – “Awsten + Travis’ Slumber Party” – with his friend Travis Riddle. The podcast features them reading Waterparks fan-fiction. Awsten does not drink alcohol, according to ask.fm, due to him having ‘an addictive personality’, and knowing it would not be suitable for him and his profession.

Appearance

Awsten has a height of 5ft 10ins (1.78m) and weighs 154lbs (70kgs). He was born with a condition called Heterochromia iridium which causes the irises of an individual’s eyes to have different colors.

So his left eye is a muddled grey-blue color, and his right eye bright green.

Awsten’s natural hair color is a dark brown, but he enjoys dyeing his hair and makes it a new color for every album. The band’s fans believe that any change in his hair color signals a new era.

Net worth and salary

Awsten’s estimated net worth is over $1 million, as of early 2020. Of course his annual income can vary enormously, depending on his commitments and there success.

‘Austin’ isn’t his name, his real name is Awsten, not a stage name.
