Who is Andrea Mitchell?

Andrea was born in New Rochelle, New York State USA, on 30 October 1946 – her zodiac sign is Scorpio, and she holds American nationality. She’s a TV journalist and anchor, who’s probably known best for the work which she’s done for the American TV network NBC.

Early life and education

Andrea was raised in New Rochelle by her Jewish parents Sydney and Cecile Mitchell (nee Rubenstein); her mother worked at the New York Institute of Technology as an administrator, while her father was the CEO and co-owner of a Manhattan furniture manufacturing company, as well as the president of the Beth El Synagogue. Andrea has a younger brother Arthur Mitchell who was born in on 31 July 1950, and is today a Canadian politician who holds both American and Canadian nationality.

Starting from a very early age, both Andrea and Arthur were urged by their parents to focus on their education, so that they could pursue a college degree. Andrea studied at New Rochelle High School, and was involved in many activities during her four years there, while she was around 16 years old when she discovered that her calling was journalism.

Upon matriculating in 1964, she enrolled at University of Pennsylvania, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature in 1967; while still attending the university, Andrea worked at the student radio station WXPN as its news director.

Career as a journalist

Following graduation, Andrea was hired to work at the radio station KYW as a reporter, and gained recognition after she was promoted to the position of a City Hall correspondent; she also occasionally reported for KYW-TV during those years.

In 1976, she moved to Washington, D. C. when offered to work at WTOP (now WUSA), then was hired by NBC in 1978, becoming a general correspondent.

In 1979, Andrea became the correspondent for NBC News and covered the energy crisis which took place in that year, while she also covered the 1979 Three Mile Island accident. She then covered the White House between 1981 and 1988, before becoming chief congressional correspondent until 1992, when she was promoted to chief White House correspondent. In November 1994, Andrea became NBC News’ chief of foreign affairs correspondent.

She published her book “Talking Back… to Presidents, Dictators, and Assorted Scoundrels” in 2005, and it follows her career.

Since 2008, she has been hosting the news and commentary show “Andrea Mitchell Reports” for MSNBC.

Controversy

Andrea was questioned by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 2003, after the daily newspaper “The Washington Post” published an article about her having leaked the identity of the spy novelist and CIA officer Valerie Plame; Andrea’s name could then then be found on the US ‘person of interest’ list.

She attended a news conference in Khartoum, Sudan in July 2005, and after having asked the Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir an ‘inappropriate’ question – ‘Can you tell us why the government is supporting the militias and why should Americans believe your promises?’, was then forcibly removed from the room by two armed security guards.

On 5 June 2008, Andrea referred to southwest Virginia voters as ‘rednecks’, but apologized for her comment four days later.

In 2012, Andrea and the American political commentator Christopher Michael ‘Chris’ Cillizza laughed during an episode of the show “Andrea Mitchell Reports”, when a video of the presidential candidate Mitt Romney was shown, which seemed to feature him being impressed by a touchscreen which he had found at the convenience store Wawa. Andrea stated that it might had been ‘Mitt’s supermarket scanner moment’, referring to a myth about the former President of the US George H. W. Bush having been fascinated by a supermarket scanner in 1992.

Most recently, in February 2019, Andrea stated that the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was against ‘the Polish and Nazi regimes’, and although she did apologize for her comment only a couple of days later, she was still sued by the Polish Institute of National Remembrance in Polish court, for claiming that Poland was involved in the Holocaust.

Love life and husband

Not a lot is known about Andrea’s private life, as she prefers to keep its details away from the media’s attention. It’s known that her first husband was the non-celebrity American man Gil Jackson, and it’s believed that they had exchanged vows sometime in the late ‘60s; the two didn’t have children, and divorced in the mid-‘70s.

On 6 April 1997, Andrea married her long-term boyfriend Alan Greenspan, who’s an American economist and who served five terms as chair of the Federal Reserve between 1987 and 2006.

Andrea doesn’t have children, and while the reason behind this is widely believed to be wanting to focus on her career, some of her fans have claimed that she’s perhaps infertile; this hasn’t been confirmed by Andrea.

As of March 2022, she’s married to her second husband Alan Greenspan, and doesn’t have children.

Hobbies and other interests

Andrea seems to be enjoying the attention which she’s receiving from her more than 10,000 followers on Instagram, and has uploaded over 50 pictures onto the network, most of which have been taken during her work.

Her job has taken her all around the world, and although she was once passionate about travelling, today Andrea seems to prefer staying in New York City.

She likes to spend her spare time in nature, and usually vacations at national parks.

Andrea’s a philanthropist, and has donated money to various charity organizations, while she’s also attended many fundraisers.

She enjoys watching movies, and her favorite actor and actress are Richard Gere and Emma Watson, while a couple of her favorite movies include “Hachi: A Dog’s Tale”, the franchise “Harry Potter”, and “Pretty Woman”.

Cancer

Andrea was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2011, and because it was discovered in its early stage, it was easily treated.

There have also been some rumors circulating the internet claiming that Andrea’s suffering from a brain tumor, but these have been proven false.

Age, height and net worth

Andrea’s age is 75. She has medium long blonde hair and brown eyes, her height is 5ft 10ins (1.8m) and she weighs around 155lbs (70kgs).

As of March 2022, her net worth has been estimated at more than $5 million.
