Tony Kanaan was born as Antoine Rizkallah Kanaan Filho on 31 December 1974, in Salvador, Brazil. His father, who got him into racing, was a factory owner, but who died from cancer when Kanaan was a teenager.

His interest in racing was developed as his father was a racing enthusiast, with whom the boy started watching races on television in early childhood. According to Kanaan, shortly before his father died, he asked the boy to take care of the family, and to keep racing. Not only did Tony keep the promise given to his father, but he eventually achieved enormous success in racing. Following his dream to pursue a racing career led Kanaan to move to Italy, where he began working in a race shop. The year 2004 saw him becoming the Indy Car Series champion, and the first driver to compete every lap in an Indie Car Series season. Another great success came in 2014, when he became the 2014 Rolex 24 (Daytona) overall winner.
