Early life and education

Alexis was raised as an only child in Manhattan, by her mother Martha Stewart who’s a famous American businesswoman, author and TV personality, and father Andrew who was a lawyer, and who completed his education at Yale Law School; Martha and Andrew separated in 1987 and divorced three years later.

Having been raised by academically educated parents, Alexis was urged to focus on her education from a very early age, and was thus amongst the top of her class while attending a local elementary school. She went on to attend Putney School in Vermont, and was highly active during her four years there, as she appeared in various plays performed at the school, wrote articles for the school sports newspaper, and played tennis.

Upon matriculating in 1983, Alexis enrolled at Columbia University’s Barnard College, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in English in 1987; her mother Martha had attended the same college.

Alexis hasn’t shared many details with the public concerning her early career, but it’s known that she had several jobs in the two decades following her graduation, and was mostly focused on working on radio.

She gained recognition in October 2005, when she and Jennifer Koppelman Hutt began hosting the talk-show “Whatever with Alexis and Jennifer”. It was characterized by them talking about whatever came to their mind, and ran through to 2011 when it ended.

Concurrently, on 16 September 2008, Alexis and Jennifer began hosting the show “Whatever, Martha” for Fine Living Network, and it was renewed for another season in 2009, which premiered on 23 September; in the show, the two women made fun of the TV show “Martha Stewart Living”, which featured Alexis’ mother during her everyday life. She’s probably known best for the diversified media and merchandising company Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc. (MSLO) which she founded in 1997, and which has been owned by Marquee Brands LLC since April 2019.

Martha was raised in Nutley, New Jersey alongside her five siblings, by their mother Martha Kostyra (nee Ruszkowski) who died in 2007, aged 93, and father Edward Kostyra who passed away in 1979, aged 67; both Martha and Edward were teachers.

She was very young when she began modelling, and was 15 when she appeared in a Unilever commercial. Martha learned a lot about cooking and sewing from her mother while growing up, and her father taught her gardening. She matriculated from Nutley High School in 1959, and then enrolled at Barnard College of Columbia University, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in architectural history in 1963.

It was while still attending college, in July 1961 that Martha married Andrew Stewart.

She began working as a stockbroker in 1967, and a decade later launched a catering business from her basement.
