Early life, family, educational background

Alberto Amman is a Libra, born on 20 October 1978, in Cordoba, Argentina. His father, Luis Alberto Ammann, is a politician, writer and journalist, and his mother is Neilda Rey. To the public’s knowledge, Alberto does not have any siblings; but he is close to both of his parents.

Alberto attended ther prestigious Juan Carlos Corazza Acting Studio, where he was taught by Ricky Ceballos, Rubén Andalor and Willy Ianni . Alberto would also participate in acting workshops with Gullermo Lanni and Jolie Libois.

In 1978, Alberto’s parents fled to Spain with Alberto when he was the tender age of one month, to escae Argentina’s military dictatorship. The small family of three lived in Spain for four years, then returned to Argentina in 1982.

Career

Alberto moved back to Spain so he could join the Theater Seminary Jolie Libois. A Spanish talent agency, Kuranda, hosted a competition to discover new talent, and Alberto won a spot on the Caras Nuevas list.

Alberto started in theatre before moving to on-screen roles.

He had a role in the play, “Las brujas de Salem” (The Crucible), which was directed by Ricardo Ceballos.

Alberto’s on screen debut was in 2008 with the television series, “Plan America.” In 2009, he appeared in the Spanish film, “Cell 211,” playing a prison guard whose identity is mistaken as an inmate when the prison is taken over. Alberto’s impressive performance earned him a Spanish SAG Award for the best acting role, and a Goya Award (Spanish Academy Award). “Cell 211” was named the most successful film of 2009.

Riding off the success of “Cell 211,” Alberto was cast in the lead role in the Spanish and Brazilian-produced film, “Lope” in 2010, playing Lope de Vega, who was a Spanish dramatist and poet in the late 16th and early 17th century. In 2011, Alberto co-starred alongside Daniel Bruhl in the science-fiction movie “Eva,” directed by Kike Maillo.

In 2012 starred in the thriller film “Invader”, playing a Spanish military doctor trying to help with peace-making in Iraq.

The director of “Invader,” Daniel Calparsoro was so impressed by Alberto’s acting, that he offered him a role in his next movie, “Combustion”,  and in the same year co-starred with Ricardo Darin in the thriller, “Tesis Sobre Un Homicidio,” directed by Hernán A. Godfrid.

In 2013’s “Mindscape,” a science-fiction thriller directed by Jorge Dorado, Alberto guest-starred in his first English-speaking role. Later that year, Alberto returned to Argentina to star in “Betibú,” directed by Miguel Coha, then went to Peru in 2014 to co-star alongside Stephen Dorff in “Oliver’s Deal,” directed by Barney Elliot.

From 28 August 2015 Alberto played the lead role in the American-Columbian Netflix series, “Narcos”, which follows the rise and fall of Pablo Escobar (played by Wagner Moura), the infamous Columbian drug lord. Alberto played Pablo’s rival, Hélmer “Pacho” Herrera, who is also a drug lord and head of the Cali cartel. Alberto’s performance made him a household name and brought about most of his fame.

In 2016, Alberto played scientist Javier Delgado in the second season of “Mars” – Javier was part of the first mission to visit Mars, followed by playing in Antena 3’s mini-series, “Apaches,” which was based on the best-selling novel by Miguel Sáez Carral.

In 2018, Alberto reprised his role of Pacho Herrera, one of four Cali bosses of 1983, in the “Narcos” spinoff, “Narcos: Mexico,” which focusses on illegal drug trafficking.

Personal life

Alberto’s character in “Narcos” is gay. After a seductive and passionate scene with Alberto’s character and male love interest in the first episode of the third season, some people have come to believe that Alberto is a closeted gay. However, he has been romantically linked to a female – Spanish make-up artist, Clara Méndez-Leite, is said to be Alberto’s girlfriend. The two met in 2012 on the set of “The Invader,” for which Clara was a make-up artist for the cast. They also worked in the television series “Apaches.” From 2012, rumors of Alberto and Clara being an item spread like wildfire. On 20 December 2016, Alberto posted a picture with Clara and captioned it ‘Amor,” meaning “love,” which could be confirmation of their relationship.

Alberto and Clara opened an Interpretation School, which is an acting academy, and announced the opening on Alberto’s Instagram on 20 May 2017. He posted a picture of Clara and provided a clear description of the business in the post’s caption. On 11 September 2017, Alberto posted a photo of himself and Clara lounging around on the lawn, enjoying the sunshine and reading a book. On 2 June 2018, Clara posted a picture of herself and Alberto at a charity dinner.
