His first visit to the US was in 1975, to see his uncle who lived on Long Island in New York; Craig moved to New York City in 1983, and worked on a construction site before becoming a bouncer at the Save the Robots nightclub. He travel back and forth from the US to Scotland several times. He launched his career as a drummer for the Exposure rock band, before he joined The Bastards from Hell punk band. He then tried himself out in comedy, and created a character which he named Bing Hitler, described as ‘a parody of all the über-patriotic native folk singers who seemed to infect every public performance in Scotland’.

After he portrayed the character at the Edinburgh Festival, he appeared in the “Red Dwarf” TV series, then “Hogmanay Show” and “One Foot in the Grave” Christmas special in 1993. In 1992, he started hosting his own BBC Scotland show entitled “2000 Not Out”. In November 1994, Craig moved to Los Angeles and won his first role in 1995 in the “Maybe This Time” ABC comedy, as baker Logan McDonough. He became popular in the US after he was cast to play Mr. Wick in “The Drew Carey Show”, eventually from 1996 to 2003.

He was mostly famous for his posh ‘English’ accent, especially for his methods of firing people – after he quit the show in 2003, he occasionally appeared in it during its final two seasons. Craig has written and starred in three films, entitled “The Big Tease”, “I’ll Be There”, and “Saving Grace” – for the latter he won the Audience Award for Best Film at Aspen in Dallas, and was named the best new director at the Napa Valley Film Festival. He began hosting CBS’s “The Late Late Show” on 3 January 2005, succeeding Craig Kilborn and was praised for his performance so that the show had an average of two million unique viewers in its 2007 season. He left the show on 19 December 2014, with James Corden becoming the new host.

His novel “Between the Bridges and the River” was published on 10 April 2006, and he later released his memoirs in a book entitled “American on Purpose: The Improbable Adventures of an Unlikely Patriot” on 22 September 2009.

Craig is a huge fan of the “Doctor Who” TV series, and is a fan of Partick Thistle F.C. Scottish soccer team. He has five tattoos inked onto his skin – his favorite is “Join, or Die” which symbolizes his American patriotism. He has an FAA private pilot certificate which he received in 2009, hasn’t drunk alcohol since 1992 (after being addicted and having recovered successfully), and has been vegan since 2015.
